Poor old Mrs. Partington can't com
prehend the " new-fangled" notiOns of
the present time. She says :
" There is one thingsure ; the females
of the present regeneration are heep
more independiter than they used to be.
Why, I saw; a gal go by to-day that I
know belonged to the historical class of
society, with her dress tucked up to her
knees, her hair all buzzed up like as if
she hadn't time to comb it for a week,
and one of her grandmother's old caps
in an awful crumpled condition on her'
head. Why, laws Allie, when I was ai
gal, if any of the fellers come alongt
when I bad my clothes tucked up that
way, and my head kirered with an old
rag, why I would run for dear life and
hide out of sight. Well, well, the gals
then were innocent, unconiiscated crit
ters": now they are what the French call
" blazes."
A good story is told of a, fellow at a
cattle-show, who was making himself
ridiculously conspicuous by au evident
intention of finding fault with every
thing. (A disagreeable habit, by the
way, with some people.) At last he
burst forth :with,— "Call these'ere
prize cattle? . Why, they ain't nothing
to what our .folks raised. ..Ity father
raised the ,biggest calf of any man
round our parte!"
"I don't clouhtit," was the timely re
mark or a bystander; "and the nolsl- .
est."
The forward youth, as well may be
imagined, incontinently' subsided.
A clerk in lowa y says:
A very pretty and 'lobby young lady
called iu the store the other day and re
quested to see our lavender kid gloves,
whe.rcupon she was shown several dif
ferent shades of that color. Being a
little overcome with so great a variety.
she asked,— •
"Which of those pairs are the laven
derest.
A. Frenchman, who had been in In
dia, speaking of tiger-hunts, pleasantly
remarks . "When ze Frenchman hunts
ze tigers, ab ! ze sport is grand, npagnif
ique ! but, when ze tigar huntze French
man—out! zere is ze very devil topay !"
"Figures will not lie," is an old, and
used to be swell-credited saying. But
the introduction of hoops, crinoline,
hips, bustles, and cotton breastworks
has played the dickens with the prot•-
erb.
