THE RIGHT MAN.—The late Sir Hen
ry Smith, long Ili. P. for Colchester, was
one of the tories of the old school ; and
among the advocates of reforba- his res

a reputation for folly and .obstinacy
which was not borne out by his real.
character. On one occasion he was can
vassing in presence of numerous friends,
and on a.sking a heavy-looking farmer
for his vote, the man replied :
" I'd vote for ye, Sir Henry, as usual,
only you're such a fool."
" Fool, am I?" retorted Sir Henry ;
" then I'm the very man to represent
you."
This shaft of wit penetrated the farm

promised his vote.

he belonged.
" Well, uncle Sam," said he, "sloyou

joined the church ?"
"Oh yes," said uncle Sam, " a great
difference. Before, when he went out
to mend his fence on Sunday, he carried
his axe on his shoulder, but now he car
ries it under his overcoat."
A young lady was sweepingthestreets
with a trail two yards long. A young
man stepped upon it, partly tearing it
from her waist. She turned shortly a
round on him, and said :
" Sir, you are a rowdy.
He retorted, " Madam, yon are a dow
dy."
"If' . were ex man I would thrash you,"
said she.
" If you were pretty I would kiss
you," said he.
"This is insufferable," said the lady,
gathering up her calico and turning a

"That's true," he replied, "whether
your remark applies to yourself, your
dress, or the weather."
A correspondent writes that, if we
desire it, he will "send us something
to fill up EMI." That's just what we
want. Suppose you commence now
with a good roastingpiece of beef, a bar
rel of flour, and a bushel or two of po
tatoes.
