Wit and Justice in Missouri.
it is well known that some of the
Judges in Missouri are very reluctant to
enforce the law against ministers of the
gospel for exercising their profession
without having taken the test oath, and
avail themselves of every pretense to
discharge those who are accused. We
tell the following tale as it was told us,
vouching for nothing :
Three ministers charged with the
crime of preaching the " glorious Gos
pel of the Bon of God," were arraigned
before a certain Judge. They were reg
ularly indicted, and it was understood
that the proof against them was very
clear.
" Are you a preacher ?" said the Judge
to one of them.
" Yes, sir," relined the culprit.
" To what denomination do yon be
long ?"
"lam a Christian, sir." [With dig
nity.]
"A Christian! What do you mean
by that? Are not all preachers Chris
tians?"
`• I belong to the sect usually but also
Wrongly called Campbellites." [Not so
much dignity.]
"Ah c. Then you believe in baptising
people, in order that they may be born
again, do you?"
„ I do, sir.”
" Mr. Sheriff, discharge that man.—
He is an innocent man! He is indicted
for preaching the Gospel, and there is
not a word of Gospel in the stuff that
he preaches. It's only some of Alex
ander Campbell's nonsense. Discharge
the man."
Exit Campbellite; greatly rejoicing.
"Are you a preacher?" said the Judge,
addressing the next criminal.
" I am, sir," said the preacher.
" Of what denomination are you?"
" I am a Methodist, sir."
"Do you believe in falling fromgrace?"
" I do, sir."
"Do you believe in sprinkling peo
ple, instead of baptising them?"
" I believe that people can be baptised
by sprinkling."
" Do you believe in baptising babies?"
"It is my opinion, sir, that infants
ought to be baptised."
" Not a word of scripture for anything
of the kind, sir !" shouted his Honor.
" Mr. Sheriff, turn that man loose ! He
is no preacher. The Gospel is the truth,
and there isnit a word of truth in what
that man teaches. Turn him loose. It
is ridiculous to indict-men on such friv
olous pretenses. Turn him loose!"
Methodist disarApearil, not at all hurt
iu his feelings by the judicial abuse he
had received.
" What are you, si\f ?" said the Judge
to the third felon. I
" Some people call me a preacher, sir."
" What is your denomination?"
" I am a Baptist."
His Honor's countenance fell, and he
looked sober and sad. After a pause, he
said :
"Do you believe in salvation bygrace?'-'
" I do."

"Do you teach that immersion only
is baptism?"
" That is my doctrine."
" And you baptise none but those who
believe in lesus Christ?"
" That is my faith and practice."
" My friend, I fear it will go hard with
you ; I see you are indicted for preach
ing the Gospel, and it appears to me
that by your own confession you are
guilty."
" May it please your Honor," said the
Baptist's counsel, springing to his feet,
" that man never preached the Gospel.
I have heard him say a hundred times
that he onlyitried. I have heard him
try, myself.'?
" Mr. Sheriff, discharge . this man.—
He is not indiZtO for trying. There is
nothing said abo4 the mere effort. Let
him go, sir. Tutn him loose. Send
him about his" business. I am aston
ished that the State's attorney should
annoy the court with such frivolous in
dictments."
Exit Baptist, determined to try again.
Court adjourned.
" God save the State and this honora
ble court," exclaimed the Sheriff.
" Amen," said the three preachers.
And after all, say we, as ridictilous as
the story may seem, it has a moMl. If
the State has a right to prohibit preach
ing of the Gospel, it has a right to de
cide what the gospel is; and when this
is done, we have a national church, and
the adulterous connection of church and
state becomes complete.

" Squire W--, the livery
stable keeper, shaved me dreadfully last
week, and I want to be even with him."
" State your case," said D—.
Client.—" I asked him how much he
would charge me for a horse to go to
Dedham; he said fifteen shillings. I
took the horse, and when I came back
and paid him fifteen shillings, he said
he wanted fifteen shillings more for
coming back, and made me pay for it."
D— gave him some legal advice,
which he immediately acted upon, as
follows :
He went to the stable, and said:
" How much_will you charge me for
a horse to go - to Salem?"
Stabler replied, " Thirty shillings."'
" Harness him up."
Client went to Salem, came back by
railroad, went back to stabler, saying,
" Here is your money," paying him
thirty shillings.
" Where is my horse ?" says W—.
"He is at Salem," says client ; "
only hired him to go to Salem."
A tar, just returned from sea, met one
of his female acquaintances. He was
so overjoyed that he determined to mar
ry her; but at the altar the parson de
murred, as there was not cash enough
between them to pay the fees ; upon
which Jack offered a few shillings, say
ing, "Never mind, father, marry us as
far as that will go !"
If a man's opinions and arguments
can be disproved and refuted, he is in
no danger of being persecuted on ac
count of them.
