Both are right, however—as is generally understood that their prices are (~w, while they are atavit in business. To prove this fact, call at the People's Store, Addison, N.Y. TRAM, WIDE AWAKE.—A correspon deo at Tioga writes Ins the following cheering in ttlligence : fuesday evening, July 24, the *rens of this linage and vicinity put up a flue flag staff, 125 feet high. and run up a flag with the name of 31ajor General JOHN W. GEARY inscribed there in. As the flag reached its place, the crowd gave three reueing cheers for' Gen. Diary, the next liurtruui of Pennsylvania. The flag is 25 160, length. A Bii (.F Wispom.—Said a farmer to Ile the other day : !'.lsaut fall, a man vrhonwed , a debt of not very large' proportions, went tn.his creditor and declared his to meet the ob ligation. The creditor, not wishing to oppress the debtor, granted more time. The other day,' continued our friend, "I passed the premises of this debtor, and saw all the manure made by his stock last winter going to waste in the heap. He had not taken it away for fertilizing purposes. I thought this—that any man who could afford to :et his stable manure go to waste,-wouldnever be ready to pay his debts." We suppose that the general teaching of this fact will nut-need a word of comment. SERENADE.—The friends of Hon. 8. F. Witsoe, accompanied iily.,the Welleboro Band, gave him an impromptu serenade at the Peitnsyl. vania House last Thursday evenin7. The sere nade wi4 intended's's aAfornsal 'wislecene'bome to a faithful public servant and valued fellow cit izen. The band Aisconrsed Hail Columbia and Yankee Doodle most eloquently, after which, in reqpunse to numerous calls from the crowd. Mr. Wilson appeared and responded in a neat and appropriate speeeh. He said that he valued the ckmpliment as an endorsement of his course in Cingress during a period of national trouble. As such it afforded binit very great gratification.— After a brief allusion' to the living questions of the day, and promising to speak more at length at some future time, be bade his friends good night. The crowd gave three cheers for " Wil fen," and dispersed to their homes. MINISTERS' AND LAYMEN'S ASSOCIA nor.—The Troy District M. R. Association, wideh held its meeting in this village July 31 and AugcEt 1, proved a r most agreeable and interest ing er , nrentiou. • Owing to business and other en gagements we did not have the pleasure of being prefect at all the sessions, mach to our regret. The As.ociation presented an unusual array of talent. Dr. LORE, 01'1 . 0 of the ' ableit of divines and denominational editors, preached upon the subject of missions Tuesday evening, to a crowd ed house. Probably as big, if not the biggest day's work ever done in a saw mill, was done in Bennett & Newball's steam mill, Charleston, last _Thursday. On that day those live lumbermen .turned out 27,172 feet of pine lumber, chiefly boards. with a single circular saw, in eleven hours. The work done at their mill av erages 17,512' feet per day. Blossbarg, Sunday, August 26, P. M. SILICATE.--Our recluse friend; t34,EX FLINT, sends us greeting from his hermitage in the Caves of' Silence, the following: „. ' I have observed that-the man who flings dirty water against the wind, invariably bespatters him self. "Public opinion is of many grades. Among thieves, public sentiment applauds skilful robbit ry, adroit swindling, and embeitlement., :Wong men wbp rejoice in obscene filth, public opinion applauds filthy conversation and all kinds ~of grossness. I have observed, however, that the glory and prosperity of a country is' won by the virtuous ILO upright, who constitute the bulk of its citi— zens and uphold the State like strong pillars. " A vicious nature declares itself in the lines, and contour, and expression of the countenance; in the. - ette:sted deportment; in the swaggering walk. - • s * "Bad men are intensely self-conscious.. Being transparent to themselves, they dread inspection. They walk everywhere confronted by the reflec— tion of their evil thoughts and distorted passions. " The swine finds paradise in a mud-hole. " The man of vile instincts wallows in filth, and says, exultingly, I have found wit, humor, eloquence and logic herein.' "'The upright and highminded man regards gold, iind silver, and precious stones as dross, and public virtue aspure gold. . " Furthermore, when the whirling oesih 4 wh'eel bespatters the wise man's coat with mud, he waits patiently for it to dry, and then brushes it off." IMPROVED FARM GAT.E.-111&313Th. J. R. .s: J. M.
