Nit . ".4.44 F~ El ~~ 111 S 2 " , When I Was six years old," says a well known merchant, "my father died, leaving nothing to my mother but the charge of myself and two young sisters. After 'selling the greater part of the household - furniture -She- Owned, she took two small romasin W— street, 'L and there, by her needle, contrived in • some way—how I cannot tell, when I recollect the litticrwptiey for which she worked—to support bk In comfort.- Fre quently, however, I remember that our supper was simply a slice of bread, sea soned by hunger, and-made inviting by • the neat manner in which our-meal was served, our table always being spread with a cloth which, like my good moth er's heart, seemed ever to preserve a snow-white purity." - • Wiping his eyes, - the - Merchant - co* tinned : " Speaking of those days reminds me of the time we sat down to the table one evening, and my mother havipg the blessing of our Heavenly Father on her little defenceless ones, in tones of tenderness that I remember 3-et, she di vided the remnant of heronly loaf into three pieces,-placing one on each of our plates, but reserving none for herself.— I stole round to her, and was about to tell her that I was not hungry, when a flood of tears burst from her- eyes, and she clasped me to her bosom. " Our meal was left untouched ; we sat up late that night, and what we said I cannot tell. I know _that my mother talked to me more as a companion than a child. When We knelt down to pray, I gave up myself to be the Lord's, and to serve my mother. " But," said he, " this is not telling you how neatness ;nada my fortune. It was some time after this that my moth er found an advertisement in the news paper for an errand boy in a comniis.sion house in B street. _ " Without being needful to' wait to have my clothes mended, for my mother always kept them in good order, and al though, on close inspection, they bore traces of more than one patch,_yet_,_on the whole, they looked 'very neat; out waiting to arrange my - hair, or clean my shoes, for I was obliged to observe, from my earliest youth, the most perfect neatness in every respect, my mother sent me to see if I could obtain the sit uation. With a light step I started, for I had long wished my rrwther to allow me to do something to atiisist her. " My heart beat fast, I assure Eon, as I turned out of W— into street, and made my way along to the number my mother had given inc. I summoned all courage I could mus ter, and stepped briskly into the ware house, and, found my way into the coun ting house, and made known the object of my calling. The merchant smiled, and told me there was another boy who had come a little before me, who he thought he should engage. However, he asked me some questions, and went out and talked with the other boy, who stood in the back part of the office. " The result was the lad had been dis missed, and I entered the merchant's employment, first as an errand boy, then as a clerk, afterwards as a partner until his death, when he left me the whole of the stock in trade. After I had been in his Service some years, hie told me the reason he chose me in pref erence to the other boy, - was because of the general neatness of my person ; while in reference to the other lad he noticed that he neglected to be tidy.— To this simple circumstance has proba ably been owing the greater part of my i-ueee.zs in business." Sow to Breathe. There is one rule to be Observed in taking exercise by walking—the very best form in which it can be taken by the young and able-bodied of all ages— and that is, never to allow the action of respiration to be carried on thrdugh the mouth. The nasal passages are clearly the medium through which respiration was, by our Creator, designed to be car ried on. " God breathed into man's nostrils the, breath of life," previous to his becoming a living creature. The difference in the exhaustion of strength by a long walk with Ithe month firmly closed, and respiraticin carried on thro' the nostrils instead of through the mouth, is inconceivable to those who have never tried the experiment. In deed, this mischievotui and really unna tural habit of carrying on the work of inspiration and expiratiOn through the mouth, instead of thrOugh the nasal passages, is the true origin of almost all the diseases of the throat and lungs, as bronchitis, congestion asthma, and even consumption itself. That excess ive perspiration to which some individ uals are so liable in their sleep, which is so weakening to the body, is sorely the effect of such persons sleeping with their mouths unclosed. And the same un pleasant and exhaustive results arise to the animal system from walking with the mouth open, instead of, when not engaged in conversation, preserving the lips in a state of firm but quietcompres sion. As the heat and velocity of the blood through the lungs depend almost entirely upon the quantity of the at mospheric air inhaled with each inspi ration,—and it is unavoidable that it should be taken in, in volume, by the mouth, while it can only be supplied in moderate quantities, and just in suffi cient proportion to serve the purpose of a healthy respiratory action, while sup plied through the nostrils it is clear that the body must be much lighter and cooler, and the breathing much freer and easier, when the hitter course rather than the former is the one adopted.— Children ought never to be allowed to stand or walk with their mouths open ; for, besides the vacant appearance it gives to the, countenance, it is the cer tain precursor of coughs, colds and sore throats. Why is kissing your sweetheart like eating soup with a fork? Because it takes a long time to get enough of it. LINES OF TRAVEL.
