- ~.~. E=i=3 Editing a paper is a very pleasant bu siness. If it contains' too much politi cal matte; people won't have it. If it contains too little, they won't have it. If the type is large, it don't contain enough reading matter. If the type is smell, they can't read it. If we publish telegraph reports, folks say they are nothing but lies. - --- • - if we omit them, they say we hiie enterprise, or suppress thorn for politi c cal effect. If we have in a few jokes, folks say. we are nothing but a rattlehead. If we omit jokes, they say we are an old fossil. If we publish original matter, they damn us for not givingselections. r c . If we publish selections; folks - saywe are lazy for not writing more and giv ing them what they have not read in some other paper. If we give a man complimentary np tices, we are censured for being partial. If we do not, all hands say we are greedy hog. If we ,insert an article which pleases the ladies, men become jealous. If we do not cater to their wishes, the paper is not fit to have in their house. If we attend church, they say it is only for effect. If we do not, they denounce us as de ceitful and desperately wicked. If we remain in the office and attend to business,-folks say we are too proud to mingle with our fellows. If we go out, they say we never at tend to business. If we do not pay all bills promptly, folks say we are not to be trusted. If we do pay promptly, they say we stole the money. If we wear poor clothes, they say busi ness is poor. If we wear good ones, they say we are a spendthrift. Now what is a poor fellow to do? Children's Questions. show us the philniopher that a .child " cannot puzzle. We have never Seen such a phenomenon. Roll all the wise acres of the world into one, and the whys and wherefores of a schoolboy shall confound the combination. If, when the Admirable Crichton traveled through Europe, affixing his challenges to the gates of colleges, the professors had pitted their six year olds against the prodigy, we' warrant they would have propounded problems beyond his skill to solve. The truth is, that it is much easier to answer a learned man than a child. Your philosophers un derstand well enough that' there are matters concerning which all men are equally ignorant, and with commenda ble tact and prudence they steer clear of them. But children are bold and persistent queriests. They are not sat isfied with evasive replies. They cross examine with merciless perseverance, and sometimes drive the most profound to the refuge of it I don't know." But even that confession—so humiliating to grown up wisdom—does not always si lence the youthful searcher after know ledge. He is apt to think you ought to know, and to ask why you don't know. We really like to set a smart child on ar pedant. It is astonishing how the little interlocutor will worry and badger the man of books. But it does him good. It teaches him how much he does not know. It is very foolish for any man to give himself airs on the score of acquire ments which do not suffice to sate him from being cornered and convicted of ignorance by a mere baby. LINES OF TI{AVEL.
