flow Atierican Velvet le blade E :t• The machinery for the manufacture of American velvet was _introduced into -. this country by the inventor, a Mr. Holt, 'of Cheshire, England; and its superioi : ity in the matter of rapidity is said to :be as great as that of modern railroads • over the old stage coach system. The method is as follows : Grooved brass rods or wires were placed under the web which forms the pile, secured by threads woven into the ' warp The weaver cuts the threads by means of a knife, held in the hand, the blade of which slides along the groove, dividing the pile into two rows of threads, thus giving a nap or pile of the depth of the rod inserted. The manufacture, according to the patented method, is accomplished by weaving two warps or foundations, with a middle warp alternately rising into the upper and lower, being secured by two shuttles moving at once. The knife moves horizontally, in the same direc tion as the shuttles, and the two warps and the pile between_ are divided, and, the naps are . cut into equal lengths:- , -- Two piled fabrics—the exact counter part of each other—are thus made at one time. The knives and shuttles are all impelled by the ordinary motions of the power loom. The statement that orie hundred and ten picks or threads are made in a min ute, (or nearly two every second,) will give some idea of the rapidity of the manufacture. A man with a patented machine can make from fifty to sixty yards per week, while eight or ten yards would be a good week's work for the same person should he make use of the ordinary hand loom. The saving of la bor by this process over the wire-weav ing method, is estimated at from fity to silty per cent., while the fabrics are e qual, and in some respects superior, to those of foreign make. The looms are adapted to the manufacture of piled fab rics, such as silk plush, since an article of this nature for gentlemen's caps has become very popular as a substitute for fur. Tartan, or clan velvets, are also made.—Comm r. Bulletin. Following a Leader A very singular occurrence i 1 reported by the Ararat Advertiser. We suppose it is pretty generally known - and admit ted that the tendency which all animals have to follow a leader, is developed in no species so much as the sheep ; but we believe that even in his pastoral country, the strength of development which this instinct possesses in these an 'trials, is not generally known. One of the most remarkable illustrations of this characteristic which we have ever heard of, occurred with a flock of sheep, about a week ago, belonging to it squat ter on the Wimmera. A large mob of about feur thousand was turned out of the sheds, after being shorn, to be shep herded on the side of a creek where the grass grew more abundantly than on the plains further back. While depasturing around or near a very large hole in the river bed, from which all of the water had evaporated, one of the flock, urged by some unac countable impulse, jumped into it; an other followed, and another, till the whole flock ru shed to the spot ; and not withstanding every exertion on the part of the shepherd, they pressed en masse into the large basin till it was literally filled with a moving mass of animal life. The pressing of the flock behind rendered escape impossible, until the hole was literally filled to its level with the struggling sheep. When the mania died out—for during its continuance the shepherd had not the slightest control over the flock—they were driven from the place ; but it was found that no less than eight hundred and twenty-five were smothered, or otherwise killed by the pressure. This accident seems the more unaccountable, as we are informed that there was neither water nor grass in-the hole to tempt the rush. Col. Eli Parker, an Indian, and one of the.most trusted aids of Gen. Grant, lately returned from a lengthy tour of inspection at the South, undertake ascertain what further reduction of tla e army could be safely made. He, wear ing his uniform was struck by the re dundant professions of loyal submission which everywhere greeted him. These were so frequent as at last to excite his suspicions. He clothed himself, in citi zen's garb, and thereafter passed as a member of the Choctaw nation, well known to the South as a rich, well edu cated, and intensely pro-slavery tribe of the Southwest. This disguise unloosed the latch-strings to their secret thoughts, and thereafter lie heard not one loyal word, except when, in pursuance of his duty, he was with our own officers.— The most malignant disloyalty, the most vindictive hatred, the fiercest, the' suppressed determination to bide their time, yet wreak revenge,- was every where made visible to the man whose color and assumed relation made them confident of sympathy.
