Size of.l3polcs.
Every reader of a newspaper in which
books are noticed, frequently meets with
the terms, quarto, octavo, duodecinad,
&c., or their abbreviations, 4to, Evo,
&c. This is"frequently a great pui
ale to the uninitiated ; and it may not
be amiss, for the benefit of mankind; to
give a little expla*ttiOn of the enigMaki
Teal signs of ideas This 'is - the morone-;
cessnry, as it is the only mode by which
the size of a book is designated in print.
If one understands the •vo7s" and'. mo's,-
and has the number of pac'eS'Wll - lEff a
book contains, he can immediately form
an idea of its size ; as for instance, when
it is stated that a book is a 12.m0, of 400
[pages,] ,be et en9elvefikA
must be its appearance as to size, mak
ing aue allow4nee for the difference in
the thickness of the paper.
First, then, be it" understood, these
vo's and ine's indicate_ !the number 9f
leaves in a sheet, and correspond to the
leaves, not the pages, Which a sheet cOO - .!
tains. Take a sheet of a given size, say
medium, a sheet nineteen by twenty
four inches, and give it one fold, like a
common newspaper, and you have a fo
lio with two leaves, or four pages ; give
it another fold, and you have a 411?artO t :
[4to,] with four leaves, or - eight . pagelsl"
give it another fold, and you have an oc
tavo, [Bvo,] or eight leaves and sixteen
pages, and so on. By another mode of
folding, you obtain a 12mo, 24nao, 48mo,
&c., and another again, an 18mo, 38nio,
&c. These figures and letters, though
abbreviations of Latin, are ordinarily
in these days turned into rather burto
rous ,English by printers, publishers and
booksellers, for the sake of 'brevity.—
Thus they say a 12mo, a 48mo, instead
of a duodecimo, &c.

MATO.—The tomato is one of the Moat
healthful, as well as the most univer
pn ly liked of all the vegetables. Its
healthy qualities do not depend on the
mode of preparation for, the tahle.. It
may be eaten three times a day) cola*:
hot, cooked or raw, alone, with or With=
out salt, or pepper, or vinegar, or alto
gether, to a like advantage, and to the
utmost that can be taken with an appe
tite. Its healthful quality arises from
its slight acidity ; in this respect as val
uable perhaps . as berries, cherries, cur
rants, and similar articles; it is alsO
highly nutritious. The tomato season
ends with the frost. If hung up in a
well ventilated cellar,. with the toma
toes hanging to the vines, the " love ap
ple" will continue to ripen until Christ
mas. The cellar should not be too dry
nor too warm. The knowledge of this
may be improved to a great advantage
for the benefit of many who are inva
lids, and who are fond of the tomato.
RASPBERRY VINEGAR.—EVery house
keeper should endeavor to have at least
a small quantity of this delightful bev
erage. In cases of fevers it is Indispen
sable, and will often quiet and soothe
when nothing else will. Put two quarts
of red raspberries, nice and fresh, into
a jar, and pour over them a quart of good
vinegar. Let it stand twenty-four hours.
Strain through a flannel bag Pour this
liquid over two more quarts of fresh
berries, and again legit stand 'twenty
four hours. Strain again. Allow three
quarters of a pound of loaf or good white
sugar to every pint of juice. Stir well
into the liquid, put into a stone jar, cov
er closely, and set to stand in a kettle of
boiling water, to be kept boiling for an
hour. Strain it, and bottle ready for
use. A tablespoonful- to -a tumbler -o£
cold water, is the manner ,of. using-it.tt
