We are obligedd•to our young friend,

BUSINESS CHA.I`ihr.... , AKT. Charles Aro
tier has purchased Mr. J. Manley's interest in the
tieekeinithing business, and may be folind at the

Fayetteville, N. *l".`, will preach in St. Paul's
Church, Sunday morning, 24th instant, at
MU
IMPROVEMENT. Mr. VANHORN,
whose chair and cabinet factory was recently de
stroyed by fire, has purchased a large lot in the
rear of the former factory, on Pearl street, and
will at once erect a factory building, 30x60 feet,
two stories in height. Mr. Curtis Culver has fa
ken the job, and the frame will, be ready ,to put
together in a few days. The factory will be rear
iy fortrusiness not later than September I.
Mr. Vanhorn has 'purcbasee an eight-boise
power steam engine and boiler, together with im
proved machinery for the new factory. Ho' ex
pects to employ a doben hands, we learn, and in-'
tends to extend his busineSs, measurably. The
engine and boiler room will
.):1 detached train the
main building, and thoroughly guarded against
fire. Success to him.
GONE TO WORK.—The strike- of. the
Morris Run miners is ended, and' the men hive
gone to work. This is, undoubtedly; wise on the
part of the working men. We are assured by va
rious pereons, generally disinterested, that -at
erercnt prices per ton good miners are able to
clear from three to five dollars per day. The busi-
ness culls for skill and :judgment, and •veiy4rop
erly commands high compensation. There is also
some risk attached to the business, sA of which
should be takea into account in the matter o.f com
pensation.
While we recognize the right of labor to make
defence against extortion and oppression, strikes
are not always profitable or just. They might be
made powerful for the righting of wrongs;' but
that they may so become, they should not be re
sorted to on slight occasions. In the case before
tie, the loss fell almost entirely upon the' miners,
the company having a large stock of coal on
hand—more than enough to cover any stoppage
likely to occur.
A GooD COMPARISON.—Said a Charles
ton farmer to UM the other day: "As I Was tom
lag to town, the thought struck we that one rule
applied to the eartlr and to. men. That ia-4a
strong, healthy, well-kept man will endure' hun
ger &It'd thirit, and hard work, with hut little
sear; the weakly, ill-kept man is prostrated by
al,y of these trials. So with farms: when well
, ultnated and well cared for, they endure drouth
and cold spring, weather; and still produce good
crop.t, ; but the poor tilled form cannot endure
drouth or late seasons. The land has nu aurplua
vigor to resist adverse influences."
Well said, indeed.
