    Ton C/10T , 1RA.—Hales • jouiizetl - . Of
Health gives the following practicalaug
gestions, which deserve immediate at
tention of all who wish to ayoid the
scourge of cholera, which threatens to
attack us next summer :
"Ist. Every householder owes it to
hinlelf, to his family, to his neighbors,
to the community in which he resides,
to have his house, from cellar to garret,
from the street curb to the rear line of
his lot, most scrupulously cleansed, by
sweeping, washing and whitewashing.
2d. Every man who has any authority
in city or towns*government should con
sider himself bound by his oath ofoffice,
and by everyconsideration of humanity,
to give himself no rest until every street,
alley, close gutter and sewer, is placed in
estate of as,perfeet cleanliness as possible,
and kept so until the frosts of next sea
son come. 3rd, These cleansing; should
be done now, in February and March,
because, if put off until warm weathei,
the very effort necessary to the removal
of filth will only tend, in the essential
nature of things, to hasten the appear
ance of the disease, to increase its ma
lignity, and to extend the time of its
devastations; because, the suns of spring
and summer the sooner warm into life
and intensify the viperic and malignant
influence, which in its remorseleestread,
wrecks so much of human hap Mess and
desolates so many hearthstones."
lIITORTANCE OF PRESENCE OF MIND.-
1. If a man faints, place him flat on his
face and let him alone.
2. If any poison is swallowed, drink
instantly helf a glass of cool water, with
a heaping teaspoonful each of common.
salt and ground mustard stirred into it;
this vomits as soon as it - reaches the
stomach: but for fear some of the poison
may remain, swallow the white . - of one
or two raw eggs, or a cup of strong coffee.
Thess two are antidotes for a greater
number of poisons than any'dozen other
articles known, with the advantage of
their being always at hand. If they
cannot be had, a pint of sweet oil, lamp
oil, "drippings," melted butter, or lard
are goad substitutes, especially if they
vomit quickly.
3. The best thing to stop the bleeding
of a moderate cut instantly. is to cover
it profusely with cob-web, or flour and
solt, half and half.
4. If the blood comes, from a wound by
jets or spirts, be spry, or the man will
die in a few minutes, because an artery
is severed : tie a handkerchief loosely
around near the part between the wound
and the heart ; put a stick between the
handkerchief and the skin, and twist it
around until the blood ceases to flow ;
keep it there until the doctor comes; if
in a position where the handkerchief
cannot be used, press the thumb on a
spot near the wound, between the wound
and the heart; increase the pressure
until the bleeding ceases, but do not
lessen the pressure for an instant, until
the physician arrives, so as to glue up
the wound by the coagulation or cooling
of the hardening blood.
5. If your clothing takes fire, slide the
hands down-the dress, keeping them as
close to the body as possible, atthe same
time sinking to the floor by bending the
dnees : this has a smothering effect upon
the flames ; if not extingnished, or a
great headway is golten, lie down on the
floor, roll over and over; or better, en
velope yourself in carpet, a rug, bed
clothes, or any gement you can get hold
of always preferring woolen.
ONE WAY TO TELL.—A traveler call
ed lately at night-fall at a farmer's
house in Albany; the owner being
from heme and the mother and daugh
ter being alone, they refused: to lodge
the wayfarer , "How far then," said he, "is it to a
house where a preacher can get lodg
ing?"
"Oh ! if you are a preacher," said the
lady, "you can stop here !"
Accordingly he dismounted, deposit
ed his saddle bags in the house, and led
his horse to the stable. Meanwhile the
mother and daughter were debating the
point as to what kind of a preacher he
was.
"He cannot be a Presbyterian," said
one 'for he is not dressed well enough."
"He is not a Methodist," said the
other "for his coat is not the right cut
for a Methodist."
"If I could find his hymn book,"
said the daughter, "I could soon tell
what sort of a preacher he is." And
with that she thrust her hand into the
saddle-bags, and polling out a flask of
liquor she exclaimed, "La! mother,
he's a hard shell bapttis."

[From the Phi/acla Evening Bulletin, Afaerh 10.]
We are gratified to hear of the continued suc

T. Helmbold, Druggist. His store, next to the
Metropolitan Hotel, is 28 feet front, 230 feet
deep, and five stories in height. It is certainly
a grand establishment, and speaks favorably of
the merit of his articles. He retains his Office
and Labratory in this city, which are also model
establishments of their class. 6
The proprietor has been induced- to make
this statement from the fact that his remedies,
