A TRIP To MANSFIELD.—WC have marked
down Thursday of last week in our note-book as
a day of unbroken sunshints--it having been the
occasion of a trip fo Mansfield. 'Leartnigiredis
boro at BA. M., in an open wagon in the midst
°f dying enowstortd, the , promise. of a rids of
a dozen miles was not flattering. The trip proi
ed cold and mittv.entful, but the.orerm welcome
which greeted as at the and of the journey, and
the comfortabli fare served up to us by Heil,
blotted out all 'recollections of past aiscomfort,
and prepared as for what was to come..
After a brief visit to Spencer's Gallery 'to see
the pictures, we proceeded to call upon Prof. AL
LEN) Principal of the State Normal School. We
larprised him in the midst of his classes, at rec
itations, as jovial. and self-poised as ever, god
ready with hissoke. Bob we confess that our ap
preciation of the Professor as an educator was
ethenced many per cent. by what tee saw and
heard on that occasion. He ignores the pumping
process in recitations, his method being topical,
by which the student is forced to develop his or
her resources or fall out in the rear of th!clafa.
We never listened to a more interesting and :sit--
itfactory recitation in practical Philesopfy.` 'lt
proved to us that the students of the Normal .
School are being prepared to enter upon the du.'
ties of life, not as children, groping blindly in
the twilight of Theory, but full.armedituady for
Aim world's work.

We accompanied the Principal through the build

same scrupulous neatness and admirable order.
And From the most charming snuggery where
The Professor keeps his household gods, we pro

excellent tea, sitting down with a hundred stu

system.

And we owe the Institution for an afternoon of
unalloyed enjoyment.
In the evening we attended an overflowing and
most enthusiastic Tempersitice Meeting at the
Methodist Church. We have seen no such out
kUturing of the people for a like purpose in many
years. We felt our unprepireduess to worthily
address so large a gathering, but aided by the
stirring addresnot Revs. Lamkin elel4, orMas,
Prof. Allen, and Jas. IC Wirson and 8.1. Elliott,
