to disturb those fixed and happy in their old
homes, where they have long worshipped
the God of their Fathers. He does not
wish to make a drain upon old churches to
their injury ; churehas that God has long
honored and blessed as pillars of the faith. i
But it is well understood, that your section
has long been a prolific source of Presbyter
ian colonization, and that thus the great
cause has been extended, and the truth has
been extensively and deeply planted.
It is but justice to those looking. for new
lands and new homes, to call their attention
to this section. At present, the eye appears
to be'fixed alone on the great North-West,
and more recently is turning to the South-
West. Here we have a region much easier
relished, and abounding in resources of the
most inviting character. Here is the rich
est soil, varied in its elements from the light
alluviel Of our wide bottoms to the olay and
sandy loam of higher grounds. Almost the
whole surface is beautifully rolling, not hilly
or broken, but every where susceptible of
cultivation, and every where furnishing the
most lovely prospects for" &His and firixi.
houses. Forests almost unequaled in the
Wise, are to be found, with the finest pop
lar groves. .
Amongst the products of the soil , are
wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, the Sorghum`
cane, tobacco, etc. The finest fruits also may
he 'otiliiiited with all ease, • yielding the
richest returns, almost without fail from
frosts that affect them so greatly in Northern
matrons. Horses, cattle, hop, and Sheep,
ma, be without number. .

The scene which takes'place at the draw
ing is one of much picturesque animation.
Groups of the finest youths of a, wide neigh
borhood, with generally their fathers and
mothers, relatives and friends, are assembled
in the spacious hall of the town-house. The
mayors, prefects, and cub prefects, are there
to receive them, with usually several officers
quartered in the, district. On every face
there is an expression •of hope and fear,
anxiety and excitement; and, as each ad
vances toward the fatal urn and draws the
paper deciding his future destiny, all the
spectators, as well as the panics imtne;
diately concerned, feel the most lively
interest. Those who draw .a higher number,.

D R. CHURCHILL'S
SPECIFICS FOR CONSUMPTION.
SYRUP OF THE HYPOPHOSPHITES,
Composed of 'the Hypophosphitee of Lime,
Soda, Potassa, and iron.
These remedies were brought to notice by Dr. John
Francis Churchnlis an eminent physician of Dublin, and
have attracted much attention from the medical profession..
To gifeJegireserei idellifiketrestion, we 'make the follow
ing extracts from Dr. Chttrehill'i Paper " On the Proximate
Came and Specific Remedy of Tuberculosis," read before
the Academy of Medicine, Paris, Jul ,1857. Says Dr.
C_—
" The total number of cases of Phthisis treated by me
amounts to thirty-five. MI were either in the second or
third stages of the complaint; that is, they bad either
softened tubercles or cavities in the lunge: of these., nin e
recovered completely, the physical signs of the disease
appearing altogether in eight out of that number; eleven
improved considerably, anctliburteen died. The results
.will be found to Justify the following conclusions :
"The proxithate smuse,,or at 'all events an eseadtial con
dition of the enbercular ;diathesis. Is the decrease in the
system of the phosphorus which it contains in an oxygeni
zable state.
"The specific remedy of the disease mishits in the use o f
a preparation of phosphorus, uniting the two conditions
being in such a state that it may be directly assimilated
and at the same time !Lithe lbwest - lxiseibld degree of oxy
dation, ; •
The effect' of these salts upon the tubercular diathesis
.is immediate;,all the general symptoms of the disease dis
til:Tearing with a rapidity which is really marvelous. If
the pathological depeeit produced b the dyscreher is of re
ant, formation,.if softening has only jnet set in, and does
not proesed to, rapidly, the tubercles'are re-absorbed and
disappear. When the softening hoe attained-a certain de
gree, it sometimes continues in spite of.the treatment; and
the issue of the disarm then depends .upon an anatomical
condition of the local lesion; on - its .extent, and upon the
exisienee or non-existence of complications. I have made
numerone-attempts to modl f the- local • condition of the
lungs by the inhalation of different substances, but hare
never obtainedany satisfactory result independent of what
wee to be attributed to the specific treatment. The Hypo
phosphites are certain prophylactics against tubercular
.disease. • .•
' " The physiologioal•;Offeets:ishon theta preparation, to
have a two-fold action; on the one hand they mesesse the
principle,..whatever -that may bee whicte'leonstitutes ner
vous force, and on the other, they elevate the tone of the
several functionsObncerned in alimentation and nutrition.
They.mem to poems, in the highest degree, all tbo there.

servers - to phosphorus Otaelf,. without; say -of the danger
which attends the use of that erubertanCe. The different
preParations Hypeptiosptiorna• Acid will undoubtedly

Modica."
The success of this treatment being so Much in ;advance
of anything before attained in the management of this
heretofore ;Aimee'. 100011bia dbiriese, calls for alhorough

here offered in the form of Ilyenp has been made.
