They say there is an Ear that hears their groans,
And in Ilis house the weary will find rest.

With chastened spirits to that will they bend,

Tfie publications of Noah Webster have been
more suocessful than those of any other Anisk-,
can author. Probably the name of n 9 other
writer, ancient or modern, has been seen on, tlyi
notwithstanding the many improvements iii
school books, real or imaginary, ae the case may
be, his Elementary Spelling Book, published by
the Appletons, is sold at the rate of one million
five hundred thousand copies every year. But it
is on his Dictionary, the great work of his life, that
hie fame is to principally rest. It is a monument
of herculean labor and profound research. And
whatever advances may be hereafter 'made inlex
icograpby, they will be largely Indebted to the
course marked out and thaMitiijiahi'provided by
Webster. The objections formerly tinged against .
this work on aooount of the peculiarities in the.
orthography of a, few words,, ,and classes „of.
words, can have but little weight now, as in thi
present edition they mostly disappear, except'
those instances in which general use 'has given
them an authority that nothing can invalidate.
So generally have some of the. rchanges intro
duced by Webster been adopted, that it is not
uncommon to,meet with articles written in oppo ,
eition to his t mede, in whioh.these_very pectilbir-

Alas I , what 'can boarding-isellools do when
building on such a foundation I What, but
add 'a few superficial airs and graces, a little
smattering of. French and music, a little
more fondnese' for dress and outside show,
which will make the innate , vulgarity all the
more conspicuous !
It' is sad to see the false ideas of refine
ment and gentility which exist in many
New England homes- To make a lady of '
the.daughter is often the great end and aim
for which' great sacrifices are made, and yet
they so train her as to make her totally un
refined and vulgar in dress, manner and
feelings. To be a lady seems. to mean• in
their vocabulary an expensively, fashionably
dressed female, who looks with contempt on
the useful home occupatiOna, and dawdle;
round the house with a piece of soiled**
