laMis may yet be hall. A family may be
v e il supported on forty sores of land, and
comfortable tenements rented for less than
one hundred dollars a year. We want yet
many farmers, mechanics good Doctors,
;teachers, and religious instructors ; but we
'do not want them unless they can come with
humble views at first, and prepared to en
dure hardships, Rs good soldiers. Nor do
we want more lecturers, more singers, more
showmen, or more who come for mere pur•
poses of speculation. The young, in gen
eral, are more desirable than the aged. Al
though some of these last may find it to he
expedient, (and the writer 9f this article is
one who, though in this category has never
regretted his removal,) vet It is obvious that
those in the decline of life will find it more
difficult to assimilate themselves to new
habits; and they will often sigh for the
greater peace which they have left behind.
Some have beep known to yield to this feel.
leg, and return to their former homes; but•
it is a circumstance I hive frequently re
marked, and' indicative of something at
tractive amongst ns, that these same persons
do often come back, and'then remain. : The
question of removal for this class, mint, of
course, depend on circumstances; but we
would advise, in general, that they be not
in haste to remove.
Ministers of the Gospel, who seek for fat
livings, should not come, for we have none
to give them; intriguing and peculating
politicians need not come, for they are
pretty likely, sooner or later, to be, called to
a strict account; ignorant pretenders had
better not come, for we have wit and in
telligence enough to expose them; and least
of all do we want those, who think to hide
here from a former profession of relig.
ion, since we have far too many of Onus al
-1
ready. ,
But we do desire the honest, the indus.
trims, the temperate, the skillful, and enter
prising, in every right pursuit . ' Above all,
we want met that fear God, and are deter
mined to , sustain hia institutions. 'To all
such we bid a cordial welcome, and can
promiie theta enough to dq, with alt reason
able success. Should such—especially if
one has started early in life, married n
a good wife, and, has sound health--should
such visit his distant friends, after a., fOw
years, they rill probably be surprised to
find him a changed man. He`-has. become

Mn. Burro' :—Permit me threugh your excel
lent paper, to express our gratitude to the Ladies
of the First Presbyterian church of Germantown,
Pa., for a box of Clothing, and ten dollars in
money,• which we have recently received from
them. These kind friends very judiciously se
looted and sent suelvthings as •willbe of real val
ue to us, and a good supply of them. For these
favors, they have our greatful thanks, and our
humble prayer to God is, that he will bless them
abundantly "with all spiritual blessings in heav-
enly places, in Christ"
We . wish also to express our thanks to our non
gregatiOn, who have recently made us a Donation
- Visit. Hard as the times are here, our 'kind
friends left with us many valuable presents, both
in money and other things neoessery in a family
-amounting in all, to near fifty dollars. ,
Our little aural, organised in June with
eleven members, now numbers thirty-four, with
- the prospect of ten or fifteen more soon. ,
Within the last few weeks we have had many
tokens of God's favor, and his people have been
greatly revived, and some eighteen have been
added to the church, and a number are still an=:
ions. Our prospects as a•churoh are very good ;
and as we have one of the very best parts of our .
State. for health, fertility of soil, salubrity of
climate, we,invite those of our brethren who may
desire to seek homes in the West, to visit Winter
set, before settling elsewhere.
Very respectfully, yours,

The great conflict, in the House; cape off, ao
cording to programme, on Thursday of last Week:
The LecompOn bill, from the Senate, was taken
up. Mr. Giddings objected to the second read
ing, but the reading was carried, the RePublicans
alone voting against IL Mr. Stevens then, offered
as en amendment, the bill which the Senate.Com
mittep had first reported. This was lost, the
strict Administration men voting for it. Mr.
then Montgomery offered the Crittenden bill,''
slightly altered. This passed by a vote of 120 to'
112, every member of the House being present
but one, and he was kept away by sickness. The
Administration was thus defeated by a majority`
of eight.
This bill authorizes Kansas to vote on the Le; , '
coral:ton Constitution, nndif it' shall be adopted,
the President is to issue his proclamation, an
nouncing KallSp.B as a State ef'the 'Union. If
that Constitution shall be rejected, the Territo
rial Legislature is authorized to call a Convention
to form a Constitution, which is to be sabmitted .
tc a,popular vote, and-if aclopte,d, the President
is then to annotates the State as admitted. This
turn is given to avoid any farther excitement in
Congress, on the eubjeot
The bill thus altered, was returned to the Sen.'
ate, which body adhered to the bill itself had
passed. Thus theanatter was alloWed to rest a
few day?. The event is still uncertain as to its
character. A compromise is to be, attetipted.
The attitude of Utah toward the United States
is still that of resistance. Generals Smith and
Horne 'are - ordered. to ' join:the Army at , Port
Bridger, thelormer to command the expedition.
Troops and supplies; are, being forwarded. Con
gross has passed a law, authorizing the President

to accept three regiments of volunteers for the

The Song,of the Sewing Machine.
The following beautiful lines, are from, the pen
of a- gifted lady in Cincinnati, written in' a mo
ment of inspiration, after having
,nsed one of
Grover & Baker's celebrated sowing machines;
in executing her family sewing, and published in
the Cincinnati Equiier. The new household do.
mastic sings a pleasant song:
I come from the realm of thought, I come;
Oh I give me a Welcome in every honie-
For. I bring in my trail,a stranger-guesi
A friend to the weary*" Domestic Best;"
And my iron hand has a gift'for all -
Who summon my aid in the Spring and gal.
I come, the "Child of Genius," I come;
And lo I what a treasure I bring to some :
To the weary housewife an hour from care—
An' " hoer for improvement," for thought, for
prayer ;
An hour for.repose "—l've thought it no crime
To pluck such feathers from the wings of Time.
I come,.with a cheerful song I come,
And I hope erelong through the world to roam;
'Neath the sun of the Troptes I'll lift my. wing •
In the icy hills of , the North I,'ll sing.;
And the trumpet of, Fame, from main to main,
The triumph shall sound of 'my useful reign.

Pulmonary Diseases
Letter No. 6.
We have thus far described as fully as our
limits would permit, the Anatomy and Functions
' of the Lungs, and come now to consider their
' various Diseases. First and chiefest of these,
is Pulmonary Consumption, the nature of which
can only be outlined in this letter.
Pulmonary or Tubercular Consumption consists
of a deposit in the air cells of the lungs, of a
substance termed tubercle, which much ream

deposited from and by the blood; and is formed in
small, round masses, varying in size from that of
a globule visible only by aid of the microscope,
to that of a pea, and sometimes they are found as
large as a chestnut. We have examined lungs so
filled with these deposits, that they seemed to
feel like bage of shot of great diversity of sizes.
These tubercles are removed in one of two ways ;
either they soften into a fluid matter or pus,
which opens by'ulceration into some of the larger
air tubes,- and is expelled by Gough and expecto-.
ration, of else, their softer portion is reabsorbed,
leaving 'a hardened, passive concretion, consist.

,at which the time of the pupils wcold be wasted, or spent
thlittle profit, commits a social tortmg ; whilst be who calls
deserved attention `to a nicritorione school, confers a social

I; I arethere - fore,. Free Wiley, that with the locality, ap.
polotmonte and.arrangements of your Academy, I wee well
satisfied: Your loitition is beautiful, healthful, and conve
nient ;i your buildings specious, comfortable, and well
adapted; your neighborhood intelligent, moral, and exempt
from temptiticiii Re' youth. I deemed your aesistants ca
pable, faithful, and diligent ; the recitation& I witnessed
were highly creditable. And- whatimpreased me as peen
in a school for, young gentlemen, was the
I delightful family orpanizatiou, at once cheerful and orderly,
which auseroiltd• to prevail . Any one could see that the pu

both their education and their personal comfort were cared
'for, with parental kindliest. sad .wisdom. Mrs. Osten bee,
In my.opinion, rare qualifications for the resporusiblo poet
she oconpies.
As my.visits were wholly unexpected, I moat have seen
Cottage Hun Academy in its everyday character.
Hoping that you may always enjoy the patronage which
such a school ought to command, and that you may be very
aucceseful in training the youths committed to your care,
for cleefulueea and happinessin earth and heaven,
