Hints on Sabbath Schools.
It is very well knoiri, that 'Robert' Raikes,
the• great founder of Sabbath BehoileVeon
templated quite a different 'object from That
which is now aimed at r by this Institution.
He sought to furnish the.eleinents of secu

'springing from this Source.' The great
thought was, Irigtiuction on the

for the destitute. The great defect: ef the
plan was in its lack of an_exelnsiVelyreligious
airn. - The Sabbath was, ihdied, a day fit for
all kinds ' of Christittnivelbdoing--apecially
for such Christian works aridlabnre of love
as are best dane on thatday:—Certitinly, then

effected in the nattiral workingnt events.
And God, in his wonderful' providene,e,

his Church. The instruction - of the' Soli

until this:lnstitution his become a gigantic
apparatus in the Church's hand, for the in

The PUBLIC RECEPTION OP - DR. LIV
INGSTON, at Freemason's Hall, on. Tuesday .
last, furnished one of the most gratifying •
scenes which it has been my lot to witness.
The Earl of Shaftsbnry was in the Chair, '
the platform was crowded, and the hall' was •
filled by. the friends of the London Mission
ary Society. The peculiarity of the day
was the homage openly paid by Science to
Christianity, as its great pioneer and its
best friend. • Sir Roderick Murchison, the '
President of the Royal Geographical Society,
and Sir Henry Rawlioson, (whose name has •
a world-wide reputation in connexion.with his .
successes in deciphering the cuneiform char
acters on the Assyrian marbles,) were, both
'present; 'Both bore their willing nstimony
to the extraordinary merits and services •of
