—The strewing of flowers over the graves
of departed soldiers of the war, will occur on

—The Students ,Debating Soeiety; which"
is connected With' the High School of this
village, gave a public entertainment in the
Academy of Milsicnn Friday evening last,
as adveitised, • Part first of the programme
consisted of several eriginal essays, each one
of which gave evidence of ability and study
in its preparation. Two of them were .of
a political nature, andieut and slashed on all
sides. Next came the debate. The subject
chosen was : ` l
.Flesoh}cd; That • - the- white
women of the United! State have a bettor
right to vote then the negro." The question
was thoroughly discussed and the arguments
advanced were clear and -forcible, and we
thought the President might, without ,injus
lice have decided it a - tie; but out of respect
for the ladies, probably, the victory was giv
en to theaffirnmae by:a close shave. A nota
ble feature of the occasiop was the scornful
vigor with which the Young men' denounced
the recent salary-grab by the members of the
last (longres,.s. This indicates ahealthy
sentinierit which wi,ll, be felt hereafter at
the ballothux. The Wellsburg Brass Band.
very generously furnished_ good music for the
occasion, which was fully appreciated by the
audience. The programme was well arrang
ed, thenxerciies were neither too short nor
too long, the hall was well filled, and every
one was pleased.

I -USEFUL AND SIIDGEATIV.V." —A friend
at Knoxville sends us a letter criticising the
article on the construction of dwellings print
ed in a late, issue. We think his abjection
to the Cincinnati plan is sound so far as the
question of moisture is concerned, but as a
protection against fire the• Western notion
would seem 'to be the bept. The danger
from that source in most eoitritry dwellings,
as every insurance man ylows, - is mainly
from the inslde, • from defective chimneys,
Stove-pipes, igrc.„and it would seem that the
inch - spambetween the filling and the latlr,
propoged by our correspondent, would op
erate as a most effective Quo tc'eendtiet Arc, •
ity!tho event• of its catching on the inside.
But, after all,'the danger from fire in any
well-cOnstructed detached dwelling is very
slight and not to be considered in compari
son with damp walls.
We have in mind a house in-Ahis village
'Milt, si* lnClm studding filled in with brick,
leaving an inch air chamber bet Ween the fill
idg and the outside sheathing and 'a similar
one between the brick and the lath on the
inside. This house is very dry, coOl-in'shm
mey and 'Wartri in winter; but it does not.en
tireW exelyde rats and ipleo, But, for all
that,' We beliese it it a better honse, than' if,
built On the Cincinnati plan; and we have
ttd doubt the one suggested 'by opt correi
pondent_is just about as good. Here is his
letter :
Yes; we see "ohjection" to Alm proposed
mode of construction by the "Cincinnati
- builder, which appeared in your issue of the
16th ultimo under the above head, first page.
We suggest: 'Upon a good foundation nave
a broad sill ; then - the usual frame-work of.
posts and studding, being sure to have the
studs wide enough to leave a space of_ one
inch betwixt the tilling and tha. laths fur the
plastered wall. This rair-space gives rooPt
for all moisture from without, which would
be precipitated into the rooms • if, not taken
up by said space before reaching the plastered
wall. Studding 2x Zp inches is proper for
four inch 111114. Slate or pebble stone laid
in any cheap mortar will serve a good pur
pose in teneing:out air, bat.serve as a sure
conductor for itiorsture. as far as, said
,con
ductor is continuous.. • "
By using a broad sill and cure in floor
ing mice are effectually excludied. By fill
ing flush with' the outside of studs, "the
open spaces between the studding, weatheis-:
boards and lathing are"—nowhere; and so
do not servo as "flues to conduct fire" any
where.
oar Cincinnati friend fg , any other
blinder, will accept oupsyggestions, we shall
not. regret offering them. KxoxvcLt n.
