of the legislation which abolished it. The'
sentiment of the church has usually been

Aiiropy,' even hi the case of murderers; but
the terrible increase of crime has so shock
ed the public mind that even the

-compelled to abandon any sentimental ideas
of elertieticy, - and demand that society shall
lieprotected-froth murders by enforcing the
'death penalty, now that imprisonment for
life has not only failed to diminish the num
ber of murdereE4, -- but, has absolutely in
creased the ratio in a manner hitherto un-

The action of the synod is heartily to be
commended, and coming -from a body of,
relioious'men, it ought. to carry conviction
-with it. The people of lowa, as well as of
