Covpicaos NEWR. Dear r-.449Rtitor :
Again I attempt to furnish you with some
items which lops prove interesting to your
reader ,
A few days since in company with a friend
I visited this factory, and :we were well
plerved , with what we saw there. We en
tered the furnace room by a back door, and
there found ten blowers and an equal num
ber of tending boys busily engaged in trans
forming the liquid glass into long cylinders,
termed " rollers."' It is a very pleasant sight
to witness this process, especially in a dark
evening when, the bright red rollers are
swung around by the blowers in a manner
that would seem to me careless.
A few stevs from the furnace the flatten
ing oven is located, where tly rollers are
licated to a proper stole, and men smoothed
over by the flattener until they - are larg6,
smooth sheets of glass. They are then placed
upon a little iron car, which as soon as load
etris rolled away to the cutting room. In
this room we found four men with skillful:
fingers cutting the large sheets of glass tip;
into a variety of sizes varying—as a gentle-,
man afterward told me—from seven by nine:
inches up to forty-five by seventy-two inches"
We visited the packing moth and found
large quantity of glass there ready for pack
ing, but did not ace any being packed in 66
boxes.
We next visited the pot room where the
pots are manufactured, in which the ingredi
ents, comphsing the glass are melted together:.
At dne side of the room big Labe. LaGrange
'Vas hammering the clay into the form of a
pot with one of his fists. There is just One
sight in a glass factory that is perfectly lu
dicrous, and that is to see the clay mixed be
fore it is ready to be made into pots. It it
mixed in a snit of übin, such as farmerastore
away potatoes in. After the clay is plaee4,
in this box, a man with bare feet, with b
pants rolled up to or above his knees, gets in
to it and treads away like a little boy in IL
mud puddle. This treading operation is free
gauntly kept up all day
Tht; proprietors of this institution have done
away with a great deal of bother and incon
venience by purchasing - an engine and , plac
ing it in; their - factory. Formerly alt the
sand and clay was ground by horse pmver,
while now the engine, in addition to perf,,rto 2
ing both of these services, runs a Timber
circular :AM?, which.are uled to cut lumber
into the right size for the manufacture of
