Here is wbook unlike any of its predecessors in the wen,7.literature which Las proVed so pop ular. It possesses a fresh and peculiar interest all its own; the portraiture of the noble women whOse devotion to the alleViation - of human suf , - ferog, and to the, glory of their couutryts flag, i upelied them to abandon the pleasant home sphere which it was their pi ivilege and office to Morn, and go forth with our gallant arndes to the field .of etrife and blood, there te. illustrate the loftiest and 'most truly . heroic. traits of hu , Min nature. In the of scenes of their hospital experience, where as ministers of mer cy they were enabled to cheer and comfort the sisffering, and to south the last hours (tithe dying it was the fortithe of some of the women to ex hibit a beroisM as true and lofty as any that had ever been displayed on the field of battle. Nor is the narrativwbefore us confined to scenes of this character; for there are given in this book !accounts of deeds of bravery and glory by women in actual battle which may well put to many of the boasted exploits of our sub diem. The history of tl.e late war is rich iu this ma , tetial of woman-heroism. No oth r war iu any la,e Or land, ever developed such realities as phis bOok treats of. Joan of Arc in battle, and 'Florence Nightingale at tl.e cot of :he wounded and Suffering soldier, have been many times re 7 p•oduced in the vast tragedy which for four years was enacted in our Southern States.— 'W here a 'Crime - tit war has produced one Florence Nightingale for the world to wonder nt and admire, thiS war produced scores of noble women heroes, as self-sacrificing:as the heroine of Scutari. These accounts are all authentic. Mr. Moore has been at the expense of much time, travel, 'Rua Money, to obtain true and reliable-state mente; -and of such only are to be foiled in this 'volume. Every character here is a splendid one. Many heroic deeds of equal interest, and 'possibly in some cases more romance, might{ have been recorded of women who went with the army as scouts or -spies; but nothing has been admitted here relating to , any woman wimee character was not known to have been pure and above suspicion. We have been tempted, in looking over' the roof sheets,to mark tier our columns a number • of things iu the army life of such noble women, here treated of, RA Mise, Margaret E. Brecken ridge, Mrs. Gen. Rickets, Miss. Carrie Sheaf's. Mrs. Booth at Fort Pillow, and many others; but want of space forbids. The " Women of . Iha. War " is a , book i of nearly 600 octavo pages: It will be published about the end of August by S. S. Scranton & C 0.,. 0.6 Asylum street, Hartford Conn., >and will be sold by subscription only. MrScranton ttie believes Les held a responsihle btriness position imthe Ameriena Publishing Coapany. We have not much space remaining; but it must ii) just'ice be added: that tltis volume is no catchpenny affair, but a book of real merit, and published literally "without regard to expense." The steel portraits are in the very highest and costliest style of the art 'and so many-of them must have involved a very heavy outlay. Sonic ia• these portraits of the women 'heroes arc "beautiful exceedingly:" and the matter of the book,no less than its elegant style of publication must insute a wide sale . • _ . _ nr.A..gents wonted in every :township and county of the country, as this b:iok will be sold by subscription.
