' petroleum and Salt;
- lb the Editor of the Petroleum Reeotder :
It is asserted as a fact beyond question im
_numerods articles in your paper, particularly
!those referring to the Sinnemahoning regiOn
.of Northern Pennsylvania, that Petroleuml is
.the product of bituminous coal. This is as
wind, I imagi^e; because such coal if touted
in these and other localities -where coal 'is
Joanna these and other localities white oil
is found.' But I am; not satisfied with this
theory. Chemical analysis has shown tha
Petrolenm may be produced by certain com
binatiuns of.. salt and lime. Now in man
localities, otl is found where coal does nu
J exist; but salt and gas is always found, and,
„So far as I have learned,limestonealso. This
ii particularly the case upon the headwaters
of the Allgheny and Sinnemulioning ricers
.Carueron and , Potter Counties, which is now
„attracting 130 much attention from , oil seekers.
It is truu that there are mountains of coal in
: that region, but it is equally ;true that there
-are large deposits : of limestone rock on 'the
• west bank of the Sinnemahoning and east
bank of the Allegheny rivers, both of which
bead in Potter County ;:and this, combined
with the strong saline,. water ~alluded to,
would, in my mind, most certainly account
•ier the gas and oil found there, on purely
ncientifie. principles. T.
