VARIOUS MATTERS.
En. Jotrasar : I have/been thinking for
• some time peat that there was danger that
the people of this county had become so much
absorbed in the mar, and in the raising of
Money to pay bounties to fill quotas, that
they woulsineglect other important matters.
-- The TeMperance cause, -how does that
stand? Is there a single Temperance organ
ization-alive in this county? If not, is it
• creditable to the philanthropic or Christian
Fart of our population ? .:Is"any decent citi
zen Of this county willing to go back to the
days of drankenness and its attendant vices ?
If not, would it not be well to do something
to 'prevent such a calamity? As yet, though
'we have ; unfortunately, chiefly through the
influence of prdended medicines- or Bitters,
gonelownialll, we are still on high ground,
and therpeople who assemble at. the County
'Sat on all puMic occasions, give evidence of
the glorious work done—so much so that
itia always mentioned by Strangers who come
,here on such occasions. •
Then, there is the Ilducatiodal ioterest.—
Are we doing justice to that ? Do we fully
,appreciate that this is the best place in the
; State to raise up men .and women, and that
to raise them in perfection is a hundred
times more profitable than to raise big crops
of whea,t or shining-fat horses ? There is an
excellent School kept in the Coudersport
Academy at this time. If the number of
scholars, in attendance were one litmdred
instead, of fil.fty, it would' be more to the
credit.'of our people, and. wonld promise)bet
;tar for our coming, men and;women.
