Just over the line in New ;York State,
opposite Potter County liras a rank Se
cessionist, and his wife is 'even ranker
than hiiuself, if possible, and for a long
time Tao. they have been tittering their
rebel sentiments and making Ihreats l of
vengeanct . against their Union neighbors
over the line. So on Saturday last, a few
of those neighbors sallied cut, and passed
-
over the line, for the purpose of plaotnag
the stars and stripes in the' face of the
rebel encampment. As soon as the Fed
erals made their' appearabee on the
ground, the enemy 'began te l show signs -
of fight, and even Made threats of using
fire-arms, but on lharning That the Fed
crals were prepired fot them on that
score, they changed their tactics, and
went in for a• field ifight, with fists and
a, rough and tuad,le generally. Both,

came I
desperately engaged, 411 the while
vomiting forth fire and smoke, blood and
death, mingled with horrid Oaths. After
receiving several severe volleys with but
little damage, One of the tall sans of Pot
ter, succeeded by main fords in driving
the enemy into his entrenchMent.§ behind
the board fence, and the field was sup-
I posed to be won. But the f l ea:tale battery
wheeled and, charged through the board
fence in splendid style, knocking the
boards right and left,

dealing her blows in all directions, upon
' those who were assisting inl planting the
flag staff, and although taken prisoner
several times and held'in arkus that could
hug like the grizily - bear, sbe , 'succeeded
in disengaging herself, and 4t last planted
herself Tight in the hole in. which the
flag staff was to be placed. Handspikes
and crowbars ivne brought to bear upon
her, but" they. failed to dislodge her,, and
!she aofftinned , to thunder forth her vol
leys,,until the hills echoedi to the din of
her awful thlinderings.'. But at length
by a skillful 7,ouave movement she was
dislodged from her positimi, and the flag
finally planted, right in t 143 teeth of the
enemy's fire, and the I Federals became
masters of the field, but retained it only
by threats of. halter and gibbet, if the
flag or.staff Was moleste Up_ to the
present hour the flag is said to, be waving
proudly, notwithstanding its close pros

wounded. Subsequent reconnoitering
diselused the fact that the church was

I hit the Union forces were miles away
from the scene of conflict. The windoWs
of the church on opposite sides *ere rid:
died with bullets.
A man in LaCrosse, Wis., a few daysi
ago rushed to the river, swearing he would;
drown himself. When ho had waded in'
to, the depth of Lis waist, his wife, who;
had followed him, seized him by the hair,
and then, as a local editor describes it,
"she led him back till they reached a,
place where the water was about two feet
deep, where she pulled him o er
ck
wardOoused him under, and pulled is,
head up again. .Drown yourself—(do n'
he went)—leave me to father the brats;
(another plunge)get drunk (*another
souse)—and start for the river ! (another
dip)—better use water instead of rot-gut
(another dip and shake of his head)—

out a wetter if not a better man, and es
ceded him into thdihouse and clOSed the
door.
