Shot.—lt is our painful duty h week to record the sudden death, by • Eltocking accident, of cue of our oldest d most esteemed citizens ; and whose 'nth has shocked ibis community more Sao any circumstance that has ever be 7 •re occurred here. On Saturday morning last, Eli Rees, 1 ., Treasurer of this county, who had ten absent from his home in this place ;Dee the preceding Monday, started from e "Forest House" in Keating township, ipt by his brother-in-law, Jr. N. V. aelison, to look after some timber lands 3lcKean county near the head of Po .to Creek. He was accompanied by a ,sag man named Daniel Reed, of Ron- t township, and the two were intending; purchase the land in ptestton, having eked at it last fall. Not being accus ed to the woods they were then in, ey got lost and wandered about nearly e whole of the forenoon; but finally me ont on the road leading from Port ileghany to Shippen, at a small run that i to the lot they were looking after. ere they sat down and eat a lunch they in their pockets, after which they ::tired the run to the lot and . csannined Not being satisfied with the appear :!e of the lot, instead of going on to trove'a the agent,) as they had in led, they concluded not to purchase and started on their return to the "For- House," and had gone about a mile, an they came to a place where coal I been dug. Here they stopped to ex ine the mine and obtain specimens, an Mr. Rees remarked jocularly to Mr. : " We can tell them that we have d a coal mine," and immediately went the pit and procuring some specimens e out, when Reed, who bad 'a rifle him,' went down in the pit, laying rifle down near a small sapling. Soon The went lowa, Mr. Rees who was 3oig on the bank above him with his 'toward the pit, spoke, saying," Dan, along—we hay.e no time to spare"; eupon Reed caught his rifle near the elwith his hand and rtarted. The mar of the lock caught on the sapling. running up to a small twig caused rifle to explode, the ball entering Mr. !Dad:: immediately under the left .Ider blade, and passing upward .ugh the lung cutting off the artery 'ng from the heart to the brain, lodg x, the right shoulder. He turned 4d toward Reed and said, "Dan, what !Jon done," at the same time putting right arm across his breast and laying land on his left shoulder, and start meard Reed, wbo received him in a in his arms, asking him as he came hint if he was shot, to which he ad that he was. After a brief um ..iousness he revived, when Reed ask ., if lie was hurt, to which he re . "The work is done—l am dying." • then asked him if he could forgive to which he answered " Yes." He inot talk any more, but was conscious his last breath, answering i.uch ons as need asked him by nodding king his head. Reed asked him it ,king to send any message to his fam m which he nodded affirmatively, but not speak. Ile expired' in about ainates from the time he was shot, holding him in his arms until be when he started and ran three %half miles to Grimes', the nearest being then too much_ exhausted merely telling them the fact of ace? death. Arrangements were a made to bring in the .body, and sea- 1 t ql soon started out for that pur- aCcompanied by Reed. accident happened at aLont 2 , and the body .was brought I lea' house at about 6 'o'clock. A miler Was immediately dispatched ","Forest House," whence mint* '',atediately started to this place, e arrived at about 8 o'clock,- when 41 9 and this community were in : of the great bereavement they bad met with. Few could ; believe it—none could for a while realize it. - . The facts above are :Lg-given by .Mr. Reed, and are doubtless correct. M. heed acutely feels the , great grief, ,publie cod private, that he has thus innocently occa sioned, and though it may cause him lone years of such - heart' suffering as one in his position only can knuw, he will'alse have reason to remember that the: friends of the deceased, as also this entire mann uity, believe bin, innocent and pity him. An inquest MS held on the body, at i Port Allegheny, on Sunday, and a ver dict in accordance with the above facts rendered', The corpse reached this place' at. about 9 o'clock Sunday 'night, and the funeral was he'd to-day (WedneSday) at 10 A. N., from the residence of the de-I sermon being preached at the M. E. Church by the pastor, Rev. Strong.. Mr. Rees was about 46- years of age, and has-resided in this place about 22 years, during which he has been - a stew- and—a pillar in fact—of the ;Methodist, Episcopal Church, and has led a consist ent Christian life. Ile was married nearly a year before he took up his resi deuce here, and leaves a wife, fur sons and a daughter, together with several Irother and sisters and friends without number, to mourn their loss. Be was a carpenter by _trade, and had acquired considerable property, by perse- • veriug energy, in building houses and bridges in this and other counties in this' State. In 1858 he was elected County Treasurer, and his term of office would have expired Dec. 31st,inst. In his death this community have experienced '.an reparable-'loss, and few in the large as semblage at his funeral to-day sventawa,y• without giving tearful testimony to the 1,-i! , 11 esteem in which he was held. Ile had " fought a good fight-- . --was firm in the faith "—and had won " the crown of glory," not only in life, but in death. -fip.e,ei4l .Shares Charcoal Tooth Soap Will cleanse better and preserve the teeth and Gum's longer than any other known sub- CA:lllce.
