ODE TO LOVE.
•L wx. WALLACI.
Come or Enztt!—born in light,
Where Creation's wandering fires
Jewelled first the brow of night,
And the angels swept their lyres!—
Seraphs then by thee impelled,
font before the august throne,
And in ecstacy beheld
Thy bright effulgence alone—
Glowing—burning—flashing down,
From Jehovah's awful crown
Como or PAnAnrsEl—thy wings
Glorious as the morning spread,
When by Eden's glassy springs,
Earth's first pair of mortals wod;—
Lions terrible in strength
Courted man's approving look,—
He before the serpent's length
Not as now in terror shook,
And the harps of angels played
Notes unearthly in the shade.
COMFOOTER Or EAT/TO—we knee!,
Drunk with pleasure, at thy shrine,
And in boyhood's rapture foal
Preeenco nought so sweat as thine.
In the mother's eye of blue—
In tho virgin's blushing cheek,
Where the bright soul sparkling through,
Utters more than words can speak,
In the Brat long kiss we see
Mirrored thy divinity.
Roll the battle's stormy drum!
Wave the banned—peal the fife!
Hark! the fearful cry, •they come,
Sword to sword and life for lib:"
See tho patriot moved b) thee,
Bleeding falls upon the sod;
Still be shouts "your watchword be
Fazitooml NATIVM L•ND and Oon!"
Hark the cannon's dying roll
Victory uttors to his soul!
Minim scowls his haggard brow!
Black lisvzsos site waiting by !
Now the knife is lifted—nOw
Passion rolls her blood-shot eye I--
Softly—sweet thy words implore,
And thy smiles the brow have weath'il;
Passion's burning rage is o'er—
Moan Es's glittering kinfe is sheathed—
Per as brothers—friends embrace
In thy rosy-dwelling place.
Leaps the storm-king from his cloud—
Bursts the whirlwind from his
And the giant wood is bowed 7
In the tempeat•t•oubled air!—
Save hint Heaven! the sheltering oak
Quivers—crashes on the ground;—
Beathless of the thunder-strokin—
Tremblingly he looks around:--
Thine, oh! Love, the sheltering power,
In creation's darkest hour !
Gods from rugged marble start—
Blossoms gem the withered trea—
Glory is where'er thou art—
Ruin, when bereft of thee
Ceased the ancient hymn of spheres—.
• Suns become at noon llay dim—
Mourning angles stood in tears—
Even_ohook the throne of ant—.
When thou for us glorified.
In the mortals, suffered—died.
Mzues's syttsos!—at thy word
(Where the Tempest reared his form,
But him voice no longer heard,)
Rainbows wreathed the dying storm!
Thunders in their darkest ire—
Lightnings in their wildest flash—
letnas quench their deadliest fire—
Stormy oceans cease to dash—
When the sunny brow appears
Sparkling from the clouded spheres!
nes&Nee. nniouTl—thy fingers sweep
Nature's harp-strings, and her song
From the torront•rill and deep,
Peals eternally along.
Where no eyes hai seen but His
Through the boundless sea of space,
Worlds by thee impelled in bliss,
Roll with majesty and grace:
Yes! where cherubs fear to tread,
Thou the dance of stars has lead!
Gr.onions Cams! whose links unite
Earth to God's eternal seat—
Where the golden orbs of night
Are but clay beneath its feet—
Man—archangles—worlds adore thee—
And the everlasting hours;
Earth's assembled thousands bending
Round thine altar breathe the prayer—
Hail the day when seraphs blending
In the crimson clouds of air,
Ope thy temple—yet untrod,
And unveil its monarch—Gon!
' IT LOOKS BO GENTEEL.-.—The editor of
the Maine Cultivator is a man of good no

:an idea that early rising is better than late
rising; but that is a false notion altogether.
.Early rising puts color into the cheek to be

what of that? It makes you strong, beau.

people, who have to earn their meals be . -

then gets up with a pale face and fevered
pulse, it looks so genteel!

LOG CABIN RIFLE.
APROPOSITION WORTH CONSIDERING.
To induce persons to act as agents for
procuring subscribers to the RIFLE we sub
mit the following proposition.
For $35 we will send one hundred copies
to not more than ten addresses.
For $l5 forty copies to not more than
four.
For $5 twelve copies to one address.
This will afford over twenty-five per cent
to agents for their trouble, and as every
one can procure one hundred or more sub
scribers, in their own neighborhood, he
will be doing a fair business in these hard
times. Any one to make it a business for
a month could procure two or three thou
sand at least, as no body will refuse to pay
fifty cents for a paper for six months during
so exciting a campaign as the approaching
one will undoubtedly be.

CERTIFICATE.—We certify, that we
have in use one of Mr. S. H. LITTLE'S
PATENT HORSE POWERS, and be.
lieve it to be decidedly superior to any thing
of the kind we have ever seen. From the
small degree of friction and the rapidity of
motion, two horses have thrashed at the
rate of two hundred dozen a day, with the
greatest ease, and without inju ry to the
grain. ABRAHAM

WE, the undersigned, do hereby certify
that we have seen one of S. H. Little's
Two Horse Patent Portable Thrashing Ma
chine in use and can assure the Farmers
and the Public that it is worthy of the
highest praise and patronage, as two horses
can do the work of four with more ease and
less hands. It saves one half the labour
and performs the work in the beat manner
possible. It possesses a decided advantage
over any other machine, being less liable to
get out of order, and easily to be removed.
To see it in operation is sufficient to satisfy
any one of its great utility and the propriety
of our statement.
