- -- DUFF GREEN'S CALCULATION. Gen. Duff Green is an old stager in poli tics, and withal a very cool calculator. We find in the "Pilot," his new paper just star ted in Baltimore, the following: HOW STANDS THE QTTESTIONt From the best consideration of the sub ject which we can give, the state of the Presidential election may be sot down as follows: For Gen. Harrison—Vermont, Massachusetts, 14 R. Island, 4 Connecticut, 8 New Jersey, 8 New York, 42 Delaware, 3 Maryland, 10 Ohio, 21 Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois. Michigan, 149 n—Maine, 10 N. Hampshire, 7 Arkansas, 3 Mississippi, 5 Georgia, 11 Alabama, 7 S. Carolina, 11 For Mr. Six States giving 54 DoubttW, Pennsylvania, 30 Missouri, 4 Tennessee, 15 Louisiana, b N. Carolina, 15 Virginia, 23 It will thus''be seen that the whole electo ral vote is 295—and that taking all the States assumed as certain for General liar. noon, he will be elected a single vote; that should he Jose New York, and carry Pennsylvania and Virginia, be will be elec ted by twelve votes; and should he lose Maryland and New York, he must get Tennessee or North Carolina, or some oth er State, m addition to Pennsylvania and Virginia, to be elected. tip We ask our readers to examine this ta ble as sensible men. We ask them to look at the Virginia Electoral Ticket, and pon der for a moment on the names of those.who compose it. We happen to know the polit. lea' opinions of thirteen of the twenty-three, and of that thirteen, eleven were the origi. - nal friends of General Jackson, and State Rights men. When we go into Ohio, lien tucky, Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina, and the South, we will find many who were originally for Jackson, and State Rights men, who are now among the most active and zealous supporters of General Harrison; and we know that there are many others who, if they can be induced to hear argu. meat and believe facts, will swell the num ber—and who are deterred by the appro. tensions that General Harrison, if elected, will be under the influence of men whose political opinions and principles they disap prove;, whose objections are not to what they know him to be, but to what they fear he may become, under the influences that will surround lam. Wise of Virginia, thus epigrammatizes the history of Gen. Harrison : "It proves him to be a patriot, a success ful soldier, a republican of the plain strict, stern school ; a statesman of enlarged views, looking to his whole conotry; and to all its parts, for practical wisdom; a benefac tor of all its pads ever entrusted to his guardianship and care; a scholar, a writer, au honest man, and a gentleman alike be: loved in his private, and gloriously renow ned in his public life. What more can be said of any man? I believe there is not a man of our country now living who can point to a life of greater usefulness and of , more distinguished public services, both' civil and military, than Gen. William Hen ry Harrison." Comma R0urr0...".." It looks rather blue," said a distinguished friend of Mr. Van Buren. "Yes, rather," sad the little great man, " but it will come round by and by." This abiding taith of the President of the Party reminds us of the drunkard go. ing to bed: " Why don't you get into bedl" says his friend. " Why wh—wait a minute, I'll get in directly. its coming sound." resumed the drunkard,ma king a dive head foremost to the floor. Well I failed in that experiment ; but wait a minute, its coming around again."—Dive again. This time he deified out his brains. —N. Y. Star. Tuz Hoosmigne BEO.ICE Loom: I—The people of Indiana recently held an 'acre meeting' at Connersville, in that State.— Several counties met together in Conven- tion, and the moccasin boys turned out of Hoosier cabins by thousands. The number present estimated at from 10 to 15,000. In addition to cannoes, log cabins, &c., a thrashing floor was drawn in the procession on which four men used their flails, and talking of the Sub• Treasury rats, and Sub- Treasury times, when the thrasher is to get but 10 cents per day for his hard labor ! The Hoosiers understand it. INFAMOUS PLOT TO CHEAT TEE PEOPLE. The Providence Journal says: A plot had been formed, an infamous plot to sell the State of Connecticut to Van Buren. The Locofocat intended to carry the Legis. tuba% and then alter the law providing for the eheiar of ELECTORS OF PRESIDENT AND V= Patina Err; to tale that election from the people and to APPOINT ma ELECTOR! THE melancholy effects of which our obituaries painfully' exhibit, have for some years been increasing to an alarming extent. The dreadful ravages of these complaints have in a vast number of cases been arrested, by the use of Dr. Relfe's Asthmatic or Consumptive Pills, which have proved one of the most useful medicines ever yet discovered, for complaints of the Lungs generally. This medicine has m etered a large number of persons, from the very borders of the grave. to health and society, who had been given over by their friends, and in many instances even by their Physicians, as past ralief ! I tool it a duty In cumbent on me to inform you more min utely for the benefit of others who mny In like manner bo affected. To be more paticular, I would say that for about ten years past with but little in termission,' have been affected with a hard, dry, backing cough, attended with great pain and sinking of the stomach and with very little raising of phlegm—that I have tried from time to time many prescriptions, with no or at most, with a temporary relief and had become constrained to believe that I should recieve no lasting relief when I was recommended to make trial of the above named Pills, which 1 did with little confidence of a beneficial result, but contra. ry to my expectation, in a few days my cough was wholly broken up, and subse. quently removed I I feel thankful for the benefit I have re ceived, and am full) persunded that many, if not all, who are affected in the mam.or that I have been, would find a complete cure by doing as I have done. A gentleman states an extraordinary case, that of his wife, who was reduced so low by a pulmonary complaint, that symp toms of approaching dissolution began to exhibit themselves, so the! her Physician intimated that nothing further could be done for her—that her case was past hu man skill, and the Doctor observed shortly after, while at a neighbors, that Mrs. W. was about to leave as. The same evening a relation recommended a trial of these (Relfe's Asthmatic) Pills, they were acco,ll - administered, producing such relief, and erecting so favorable a change during the night, that in the morning strong hopes were afforded ofat least a partial restoration of her health, which was effected, and made comparitively comfortable by a continued sue of these Pills. Timely Relief. A person recently from neglecting a slight cold, became so seriously affected with a severe cough, which notwithstanding every attempt to remove, became so bad as to oblige him to suspend attending to business, and finally to exhibit such alarm• ing symptoms as to excite serious fears for the result—in these circumstances ho was advised to make use of these Pills, which he did, and with such complete success, as to be able to resume his business in a few days, entirely cured ! PHILADELPHIA, August IGth, 1838. Mr. ATKISSON—Dear Sir: A few weeks ago I noticed in your paper, an account of the surpri sing effects of Jayne's Carminative, in restoring a great number of passengers on board a Missis sippi steamboat, to perfect health who wore affec ted with Bowel Complaint. I was glad to sea you notice it so kindly; you may rest assured it deserves tho praise bestowed upon it. The ben efit I have received from this medicine, more es pecially his Expectorant, Induces mo to state my case to you.for the benefit of those who ate afflic ted in the same way. It has been my misfortune, sir, to labor under a cough and usthmatical. op. prossion, for more than belle century. NV hen a soldier in the American camp, in 1778,1, with many others, (owing to great exposure,) had a violent attack of disease of the Lengs.by which I was disabled from duty for a long time. Sipco that period until recently, I have glover been free from a violent Cough and difficulty of breathing. Year after year I have expectorated over a gill a day; often much more, and sometimes mixed with blood. For months together, night after night, I have had to sit or be bolstered up to ob tain my breath. The weakness and debility cau. sod by such constant expectoration, frequently brought mo to a state borderin , : on death. It has boon a matter of astonishment to my family and friends that lam liars to write this to you. I have had skilful physicians to attend me, and every thing done that was thought likely to give me relief, without any beneficial effect. Last winter I had another severe attack of Inflame. lion of the Lunge, which I fully expected would be the last. I then considered my case as past the aid of medicine" when I was persuaded to nail on Doctor Jayne. With thn assistance of Divine Providence, through him,' was once more raised from my bed, but the coughing and wheezing wearied me day and night. He advised me to use his Expectorant. 1 did so, with a strong hope that, as it had oured many of my acquaintances of various diseases of the Lu gs, it might at least mitigate my sufferings. Need I say how gratifi ed I felt? It has Errtc•rostxr CURED me. As soon as I commenced taking it. I found it leach ed my case, and I began to breathe with more freedom.
