B. BROWN, Sc. G. II BROWN, EOITORS
VfEARLY three years have elapsed since the
commencement of the AMARANTH, and dur
ing that period it has received a stetuly increase of
patronage. To be in fault is the common lot of human
ity, anti we make no pretence of an exemption from
the charge; however, our intentions are to have as few
errors as possible, whde we endeavor that cur produc
tions shall lie acceptable to our readers, and approved
by the community in general. The Amaranth takes
no part in the discussion of religion or politics, and,in
adhering to this rule,we have excluded many articles
front its columns. The same regulation will be contin
ued, although elegonce, power and poignancy may
sometimes receive a denial. The work is now perma
nently established, alt ho' at it' commencement there
were probably those who presaged its duration to be
but like Jonah's gourd. It has been patronized by
those whom we should feel proud to name were we
perniitted, and of whose continued kindness and atten- •
tion we have assurance
The — columns of the Amaranth embrace Original
Tales, Essays, &c. from the pens of well-known and
distinguished writers, and we ihtend hereafter to pay
for such articles as shall be acceptable, him those
whose communications will add interest to uny work
extant. We arc aware it will put us to much expense,
but we are resolved to do every thing in our power to
render the work worthy a liberal support, aml the on
ly way to receive the encouragement of the public is
to pay for well written articles. We make no preten
sions to superiority over other literary works ; we
have no hired Editors to puff us into notice.nor do we
send forth a long-winded, prospectus to trumpet our
own literary consequence, and promising to nut-do all
others. No, our journal can speak for itself, and we
wish tor no one to subscribe, unletis he thinks it deser
ving of patronage. Amongst the writers who have al
ready contributed to its columns, stand the names of
Vowel, F. S. Hill, McLellan, Lewis, Ellis, Thomp
son, Mrs. Sigourney, Misses Hooper, Whipple, &c
hi the musical department, Messrs. Telmer, Corner,
Maader, Mitchell, Brown and others will lend us
their aid.
Nothing, is admitted into the paper which does not
possess merit; album poetry (!) and communications
upon dry and hacknied subjects, unless of the very first
order, are entirely excluded. The selections arc made
from the very best Foreign and American Periodicals,
with which the Editors are regularly supplied, and e
very thing of intt►rest and importance will have a
place in its columns. In noticing new publications, we
have,and shall cootinuc to take an independent course;
we shall not be governed by bribery, hilt make our
remarks devoid of fear, or the hope of favor.
The work is embellished occationally with engra
vings executed in the best manncr, and every number
with a piece of music with accompaniments for the
Piano-forte, flute, &c.
TERNS—SI, if paid in advance, otherwise they
will be charged with the usual snbiseripiei,( $2.)
No subscriptions received at a distance, (except
from agents,) unless accompanied with the payment
for one year in advance. [An edition of the paper is
published at East Bridgewater,Mass. where all-com
munications, &c. must be addressed to GEORGE 11.

office. We are obliged to adopt this rule,as our pos
tage has become a heavy tax upon us.]

I)R.NULL'S RECENTLY IMMO-
El) TRUSS.—The distinguished sur
geons and medical fimulty of the cities gen
erally, and elsewhere, have come to the
conclusion that this Truss, in its present
improved state, is the only instrument sur
gically adapted to the disease of Rupture,
and the only one that patients can rely upon
for the safe retention of the bowels and the
final cure of the disease.
In confirmation of which the following
naines of distinguished medical gentlemen
of New York city, with many others, have
expressed a decided preference for this in
strument, are respectfully added :
Valentine Mott, M. D. George Bushe, M. D
Alex. A. Stevens, M.D. David Dosnek, M. D
John B. Beck, M. D. Samuel Ackerly, DI D
Cyrus Perkins. M. D• David M. Reese, 51. I)
Jonh Stearns, M. D. Wm. Anderson, M. D.
Also, the following extract ofa late certi
ficate of Dr. Mott, of N. York:
"For the last twelve months, the curative
powers of Dr. Hull's Truss have been tested
under my own observation with the most
gratifying, success in cases of great difficul
ty, in which the mutilated mutation Trusses
so comtne;! in our market, had only aggra
vated the disea4e• . Dr. Hull is an experien
ced surgeon, who htls displayed not a little
surgical skill and mechanical ingenuity in
bringing this unrivalled instrunitait to its
present state of perfection, rendering it, I
know, the beSt I ever saw for securing, com
forting and curing the ruptured patient, and
is in my opinion, the only instrument of the
kind that is entitled to patronage of the pro

Mr. W. W. Porr ER,
Sir-1 here give you a statement of my
cure. About four years ago I became af
flicted with a complicated case of Scrofula
and White Swelling; during that period I
placed myself under the care of upwards of
eighteen respectable physicians in Boston,
Pittsburg, Albany, and this place, but their
prescriptions were in vain. My arm became
useless, the elbow joint being very much en
larged, and so covered with ulcers, that my
physician, fearing a mortification would take
place, advised me to submit to amputation,
but this very fortunately 1 rejected. On my
back there was an ulcer a large as the palm
of my hand, which became so painful that I
despaired of ever being restored to health,
or even getting relief. Having seen a simi
lar case to my own, which was cured by
your Cathalicon, us the last resort I applied
for it, and the happy result is, from its use
for about three months,' aitn perfectly cured.

P. S. As it doubtless gives you pleasure
to hear of the many cures which'your medi
cine is daily performing, I will mention two
other cases wherein complete cures resulted
from its use, and which induced me to try
it. The first is a case of an intimate friend
of mine, an old gentleman about sixty years
of age, who had the Rheumatism for a num
ber of years past, part of the time confined
to his bed; he took it merely through expe
riment, and was surprised to find himself
entirely freed from his painful disorder by
using only one bottle.

The other case was a severe Tetter, which
covered both the patient's hands; he was an
elderly man, and had the affliction lOr a long
tune; he was totally deprived of the use of
them, his attendants being obliged to cut his
food and help him to it. Two bottles etrec..
tually cured him. This case, as well as my
own, are extensively known throughout the
country, and will add much to the fame of
your already popular medicine.
Your well wisher,
JERENIIA 11 NICHOLS.
