Extract from my Note-book.
By the County Superintendent
During the present school year. a con- ,
aideiable improvement has been made in
various districts by remodilling scholl rooms
affording means for ventilation,—resent
ing with reference to comfort, and con
venience for a system of instruction. While
this is the case, we stirl have school-rooms
unfit for the training places of youth; and
destructive to the health of those confined
in them. In two or three cases scholars
have seriously frosted their feet by sitting
oin the room where the means for heating
was entirely insufficient. In a few oth e r
instances I have noticed a constantly high
temperature in the room, without means
for ventilstion. This is seriously injuri
ous in two particulars. Accustomed I
through the Jay to this warm room, the
scholars go out with a relaxed condition of
the system; and are quite likely to take
cold. These repeated changes kept up
for a whole season are sufficient to confer
injuries to the system which can never be
repaired. This assertion is ill hot excite
any unnecessary feeling for we know of
cones of infirmities in adults that can be
traced back to the school-room, for their
cause. If we add to this a want of clean- 1
linees which is occasionally found, we have
a case which is difficult to represent with
moderation. In one of these poorly van
tilated rooms, let us suppose a large num:
bar of scholars,—a half dozen boys chew_
ing tobacco and constantly emptying the
contents of their mouths in the corners ,
and under the benches.—a teacher in his I
dignified position, demonstrating practical- i
Jy and conclusive that he chews more tob
acco than all of them put together; and we
have merely a reality without exagrega.
tion. This tobacco pulverized with the
filth of the floor, rises, floats in the effluvia
of the room, and when inhaled must be
very injurioos to health.

Odd Arrangement of the Senate
Committees.
Out of twenty-one standing committees
in the U. S. Senate the South, with about
ono third of the national population, takes
the chairmanship of fourteen, leaving to
the North, comprising two thirds of
the population, but seven. If this had
been reversed by the Republicans, would 1
no doubt have been called "sectional;" but
haveing been done by the Democrats, it'
must be considered eminently "national."
And then look at the fitness of it. Mr.
fluster, of Virginia, a State next door to
bankruptcy, is Chairman of Finance! Mr. '
Clay, Alabama, an inland lawyer from a
State that lever builds a ship, is C hair
man of Commerce! Post Offices and Post
Roads are assigned to Mr, Yules of Florida
who gets his letters by bridle paths
through swamps. The Federal Capital
to Mr. Brown, of Mississippi,
which thre.
atens to dissolve the Union! The Library
to Mr Pearce. et Maryland, which makes
it a crime to read the Bible. Gen. Davis,
who advised Mississippi to establish arm°.
ries preparatory to a disslution of the Union,
is made Chairman of Military Affairs.
Mr. Green, the representative sf the Bor
der Ruffians, is made chairman of Terri
tories,----Pittsburg Gazelle.
