We give a list of names by which trees
are commonly called, with the pure botan
ical names by which they are scientifical
ly distinguished in ail countries. To prove
its usefulness, look at the lenity of oaks,
maples, birches, die. If a person speaks
of a birch-tree, what do it e understand ?
For several years a paragraph has been
floating through the press, recommending
a decoction of "walnut leaves" with which
to wash horses in fly-time, as a certain
preventive of annoyance from these pests
of the horse and his rider; but we have
never been able to find an individual that
could tell for a certainty, what the writer
of that article meant by "walnut leaves."
In New England the term walnut is almost
universally applied to the hickory (Cayara)
family, not even distinguishing between
the five varieties of this class of trees all
are walnuts. At the South and West, no
thin is known by the name of walnut but
the "black walnut" (Juglans nigra), and
butternut of New England (Juglans eine
rea) known at the West as the "white wal
nut." Now, with such a confusion of
names, who can tell what a writer means
when he talks about "walnut leaves 1"
Let him add the botanical name and we
can understand.

CONSUMPTION
And all Diseases of the Lungs and Throat,
gne reeiTivurtr
CURABLE BY INHALATION.
Which conveys the remedies to the cavities in
the lungs through the air passages, and coming
in direct contact with the disease, neutralizes
the tubercular matter, allays the cough, causes
a free and easy expectoration, heals the lungs,
purifies the blood, imparts renewed vitality to the
nervous system, giving that tone and energy so
indispensable tor the restoration of health. To
be able to state confidently that Consumption is
curable by inhalation. is to me a source of unal
loyed pleasure. It is as much under the con
trol of medical treatment us any other formid
able disease ; ninety out of every hundred ca
ses can be cured in the liras stages, and they per
cen t. i n the second ; but in the third stage. ds
impossible to save more than five per cent., to
the Longs are so cut up by the disease as to hid
defiance to medical skill. Even, however, in the
last stages, Inhalation affords extraordinary re
lief to the suffering attending this fearful scourge
which annually destroys ninety-five thousand
persons in the United States 'done ; and a cor
rect calculation shows that of the present popu
lation of the earth, eighty millions are destined
to fill the Consumptive's graves.
Truly the quiver of death has no arrow so fa
tal as Consumption. In all nges it has been the
great enemy of life, tor it spares neither age nor
sex, but sweeps off alike the brave, the beauti
fid, the graceful and the gifted. By the help o
that Supreme Being front whom commit every
good and perfect gift, I nm enabled to offer to
the afflicted a permanent and speedy cure in
Consumption. The first cause of tUbercles is
from impure blood, and the immediate effect pro
duced by their deposition in the longs is to pre
, vent the free admission of air into the air cells,
which causes a weakened vitality through the
entire system. Then surely it is more rational
I to expect greater good from medicines entering
the cavities of the lungs than those administered
through the stoma' ; the patient will always
find the lungs free end the breathing easy, after
Inhaling remedies. Thus, Inhalation is a local
remedy, nevertheless it acts constitutionally and
with more power and certainty theta remedies
administered by the stomach. To prove the pow
erful and direct Witte nee of this mode of admin
istration, chloroform inhaled will entirely de
stroy sensibility in a few minutes, paralyzing
the entire nervous system, so that a limb may ho
amputated without the slightest pain; inhaling
the ordinary bursting gin Will destroy life in a
few hours.
The inhalation of ammonia will rouse the sys
tem when aiming or apparently dead. The o
dor of many of the medicines is perceptible in
the skin a few minutes alter being inhaled, and
may be immediately detected in the hood. A
convincing proof of the constitutional effects of
inhalation, is the fact that sickness is always pro•
dared by breathing foul air—is not this positive
evidence that proper remedies, carefully prepar
ed and judiciously administered slice' the lungs
should produce the happiest results 1 During
'eighteen years' practice, many thousands suffer
ing from diseases of the lungs and throat, have
been under my care, and rhavo effected many
remarkable cures,. even after the stfflerers had
been pronounced to the last stages, which fully
satisfies ma that consumption is no longer a fa
tal disease. My treatment of consumption is
original, and founded on long experience anti a
thorough investigation. My perfect nequaintaiice
with the nature of tubercles, &c., enables me to
distinguish, readily, the various forms of disease
I dust simulate consumption, and apply the proper
remedies, rarely being mistaken even in a single
ease. This fitmiliarity, in connection with cer
tain pathological and microscopic discoveries en
ables use to relieve the lungs from the effects of
contracted chests, to enlarga the chest, purify
the blood, impart to it renewed vitality, giving
energy sad tone to the entire system.
IteCilicines with full direetion . ti sent to any part
of the United States and Cumulus by patients
communicating their symptoms by hitter. But
the cure would bo more certain if the patient
should pay me a visit, which would give me en
opportunity to examine the lungs and enable tne
to prescribe with much greater certainty, and
then the cure could be effected without toy see
ing the patient again.

- Sall-abuse is another formidable enemy to

untimely grave. It destroys the Nervous sys

train of evils more to be dreaded than death it
self. With the fullest confidence I assure the
unfortunate victims of Self-Abuse that a speedy
and permanent cure can be effected, and with
the abandonment of ruinous practices my pa
tients can be restored to robust, vigorous health.
The afflicted are cautioned against the use of
Patent Medicines, for there aro so many ingeni
ous snares in the columns of the public prints
to catch and rob the unwary sufferers that mil
lions have their constitutions ruined by the vile,
compounds of quack doctors, or the equally poi
sonous nostrums vended as "Patent Medicines."
I haw carefully analyzed many of the so-called
Patent Itledicines and find that nearly all of
them contain Corrosive Sublimate, which is one
of the strongest preparations of mercury and a
deadly poison, which instead of curing the dis
ease disables the system for life.
Three-fourths of the patent medicines now in
use are put up by unprincipled and ignorant per
sons, who do not understand even the alphabet
of materia medica, and are equally as destitute
of any knowledge of the human system, having
only one object in view, and that to make mon
