On Shoeing Horses that Overreach.
I was bred from my youth a blacksmith
and farmer, and wether a natural mechanic
or not, I was always anxious to know the
whys and the wherefores of things, or
more properly speaking, the casualties and
preventives I was also fond of trying ex.
periments upon such things as appeared
favorable improvements. I was generally
in the shop with my father of evenings
rainydays, and such other times as•l could
be spared from the farm or school. By
being in the shop so much, I obtained views
of she farmers generally, and by that was
enabled to make many improvements on
the farm. I learned also, that many far
mers entertain very erroneous views about
blacksmithing, (and I add blacksmiths,
too,) still they were bound to dictate aocor
ding to prejudices ; as instance, one says;
"This hcrse overreaches; I want you to
put the forward - shoes as far forward as
possible, and set the hind shoes as far
back, or he will tear them off." I would
sometimes try to reason the case by saying
the way to prevent a horse from overreach
ing,"is to augument the speed of the for
ward feet, and retard the motion of the
hind ones; but in order to accomplish tha',
1 shall have to reverse your dir ctione.
Some who had little or no mechanical ge.
ntue would out short all argument, and
say, "Follow my' directions, or else not
shoe the horse." Of course a mechanic
must obey orders, if he breaks owners, so
the horses would go out of the shop nicely
fettered, with his shoes clicking at every
step; while, perhaps the man of inquiry
would desire a full explanation. My way
is to make the toe corks very low, and
standing a lit• . le under, and the shoes set
as far back as convenient on the lanyard
feet, with high heel•cork, so as to let them
roll over as soon as possible. On the hind
feet I have the heel-cork low and the toe
oork high, projecting forward, thus keep
ing back the hind foot while coming up
over a high toe-cork, giving time to the
forward foot to get out of the way. If thus
shod, the horse will travel clean, without
a click, and his speed will be increased on
a trot fifteen or twenty seconds in a mile.
New England Farmer.
Tomatoes.
, A correspondent of the Genessee Far-
met, gives his mode of growing tomatoes.
He forwards hie plants in a hot bed or
green house and grows them in pots un
til a foot or a foot and a half high, turning
them out about the third week in May,
He plants them three feet apart in rows.
When'planted, be drives down a few
stakes, to make a trellis. The ground
should be dug deep and made rich vtth
manure, and a spoonful ofguano mixed
with the soil around each root. We quote :
'When they have grown sufficiently long
to tie to the trellis, I select two or three of
the longest shoots and tie them loosely to
the trellis, cutting away all other small la
terals
which may grow on the main bran
chef:. I let these main branches grow
until they have come in fitmer and let the
first bunch of fruit; then I pinch out the
top,.one joint above the fruit leaving the
leaf entire. I then allow it to go on
again until it has flowered and' set anoth
er bunch of fruit, when this is pinched out
one leaf above the bunch, the same as the
first, and so on of all the rest, taking care
to cut all the laterals which may grow on
the main branches down to the axels of the
leaves entire. If any one will take this
little extra trouble, he will be amply re
paid and absolutely astonished at the im
mense cluster of fine large tomatoes he
will have. If planted in a favorable situ
ation, they will ripen at least as early as
those grown in any other way out of doors
and frequently three days or a week earli
er. When ripe they will hang longer on
the vines without decaying. The situa
tion can hardly be too sunny. Deep, light

TREATMENT OP Inca.—Dr. Schubert,
of Germany. treats all cases of itch by
washing the patient with plenty of soft
soap and salt in water. Eight Gances of
soap and four of salt to one quart of water
make a pretty sharp bath, but he says it
will cure the majority of cases in three or
four days.
A HlNT.—When you prune a small
branch off a tree, always see that a bud is
left opposite the cut; this will help it to
heal over quickly.

death puts a period to his dreadful sufferings, by
sending film to "that bourne from whence no
traveller returns,. To such, therefore, Dr.
Johnston pledges himself to preserve the most
inviolable secrecy, and from his extensive prac•
lice in the first Hospitals of Europe and Ameri
ca, he can confidently recommend a safe and
speedy cure to the unfortunate victim of this hot
rid disease.

And all Diseases of the Lunge and Throat,
ARE POSITIVELY
CURABLE BY INHALATION.
Which conveys the remedies to the cavities in
the lungs through the air passages, and coming
in direct contact with the disease, neutralizes
the tubercular matter, allays the cough, causes
a free and easy expectoration, heals the lungs,
purifies the blood, imparts renewed vitality to the
nervous system, giving that tone and energy so
indispensable tor the restoration of heaith. To
be able to state confidently that Consumption i
curable by inhalation. is to me a source of oust
toy ed pleasure. It is as much under the eon
trot of medical treatment as any other furmid
able diseaso ; ninety out of every hundred en
sex can be cured is the first stages, and fifty pe
cent. in the second ; but in the third stage itls
impossible to save more than live per cent., for
the Lunge are so cut up by the disease as to bid
defiance to medical skill. Even, however, in the
last stages, Inhalation affords extraordinary re
lief to the suffering attending this fearful scourge
which annually destroys ninety-five thousand
persons in the United States alone ; and a cor
rect eiteculation shows that of the present popu
lation of the earth, eighty millions are destined
to fill the Consumptive's graves.
Truly the quiver of death has no arrow so fa
tal as Consumption. In all ages it has been the
great enemy of life, for it spares neither age nor
sex, but sweeps oft alike the brave, the beauti
ful, the graceful and the gifted. By the help o
that Supreme Being from whom cometh every
good and perfect gift, I am enabled to offer to
the afflicted a permanent and speedy care in
Consumption. The first cause of tubercles is
from Impure blood, and the immediate effect pro
duced by their deposition in the lungs is to pre
vent the free admission of air into the air cells,
which causes a weakened vitality through the
entire system. Then surely it is more rational
to expect greater good from medicines entering
the cavities of the lungs than those administered
through the stomach ; the patient will always
find the lungs free and the breathing easy, after
Inhaling remedies. Thus, Inhalation is a local
remedy, nevertheless it acts constitutionally and
with more power and certainty than remedies
administered by the stomach. To prove the pow
erful and direct influence of this mode ofadmin
istration, chloroform inhaled will entirely de
stroy sensibility in a few minutes, paralyzing
the entire nervous system, so that a limb may be
amputated without the slightest pain; inhaling
the ordinary burning gas will destroy life in a
few hours.
The inhalation of ammonia will rouse the sys
tem when fainting or apparently dead. The o
dor of many of the medicines is perceptible in
the sktn a few minutes after being inhaled, and
may be immediately detected in the blood. A
convincing proof of the constitutional effects of
inhalation, is the fact that sickness is always pro•
duced by breathing foul air—is not this positive
evidence that proper remedies, carefully prepar
ed and judiciously administered thro' the lungs
should produce the happiest results 1 During
eighteen years' practice, many thousands suffer
ing from diseases of the lungs and throat, have
bean under my care, and I have effected many
remarkable cures, even after the sufferers had
been pronounced in the last stages, which fully ,
satisfies ma that consumption is no longer a fa
tal disease. My treatment of consumption is
original, and founded on long experience and a
thorough investigation. My perfect acquaintance
with the nature of tubercles. &c., enables me to
distinguish, readily, iho various forms of disease
that simulate consumption, and apply the proper
remedies, rarely being mistaken even inn single
case. This familiarity, in connection with cer
tain pathological and microscopic discoveries en
ables me to relieve the lungs from the effects of
contracted chests, to enlarge the chest, purify
the blood, impart to it renewed vitality, giving
energy and tone to the entire system.

opportunity to examine the lungs and enable me
to prescribe wills much greater certainty, and
then the cure could be effected without my see

nated, however long standing or obstinate the
case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time

all their means of cure. The medicines are
pleasant without odor, causing no sickness and
free front mercury or balsam. During twenty
years of practice, I have rescued from the jaws
of Death ninny thousands, who, in the last sta
ges of the above mentioced diseases had been
given up by their physicians to die, which war
rants me in promising to the afflicted, who may
place themselves under my care, a perfect and
most speedy cure. Secret niseases are the
greatest enemies to health, as they are the fir.it
cause of Consumption. Scrofula and many oth
er diseases, and should be a terror to the hu
man family. Asa permanent cure is scarcely
ever effected, a majority of the canes falling in
to the hands of incompetent persons, who not
only fail to cure the diseases but ruin the con
stitution, filling the system with mercury, which
with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a ra
pid Consumption.
But should the disease and the treatment not
cause death speedily and the victim marries, the
disease is entailed upon the children. who are
born with feeble constitutions, and the current
of life corrupted by a virus which betrays itself
in Scrofula, Tester, Ulcers, Eruptions. and oth
er affections of the skin. Eyes. Throat and
Lungs, entailing upon them a brief existence of
suffering and .consigning them to an early
Sall-abuse is another formidable enemy to
health, for nothing else in the dread catalogue of
human diseases causes so destructive a drain
upon th.eystem, drawing its thousands of vie:
time through a lbw years of suffering down to rat
untimely grave. It destroys the Nervous sys
tem, rapidly wastes away the energies of life,
causes mental derangetnent, prevents the proper
development of the system, disqualifies for mar
riage, society, business, and all earthly happi
ness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body
and mind, predisposed to consumption and a
train of evils more to be dreaded than death it

tients can be resto red to robust, vigorous health.
The afflicted are cautioned against the use of
Patent Medicines, for there are so many ingeni
ous snares in the columns of the public prints
to catch and rob the unwary sufferers that mil
lions have their constitutions ruined by the vile
compounds of quack doctors, or the equally poi
sonous ncstrums vended as "Patent Medicines."
I have carefully analyzed many of the so-called
Patent Medicines and find that nearly all of
them contain Corrosive Sublimate, which is one
of the strongest preparations of mercury and a
deadly poison, which instead of curing the die
ease disables the system for life.
Three-fourths of the patent medicines now in
use are put up by unprincipled and ignorant per
sons, who do not understand even the alphabet
of materia medics, and are equally us destitute
of any knowledge of the human system, having
only one object in view, and that to make mon
ey regardless of consequences.
