impossible to save more then five per cent., for
the Lungs are so cut up by the disease as to bid
defiance to medical skill. Even, however, in the
last stages, Inhaledmt affords extraordinary re
lief to the suffering attending this fearful scourge
which annually destroys ninety-five thOusand
persons in the United States clone ; and n cor
rect ca'culntion shows that of the present popu
lation of the earth, eighty millions are destined
to fill the Consumptiee's graves.
Truly the quiver of death hos no arrow so fa
tal es Consumption. In all ages it has been the
great enemy of life, for it spares neither age nor
sex. but sweeps off alike the brave, the beauti
ful, th e graceful and the gifted. By the help of
that Supreme Being from whom °meth every
good and pertbet gilt, I em enabled to offer to.
the afflicted a permanent and speedy cure in
Consumption. The first cause of tubercles is
from impure blood, and the immediate effect pro
duced by their deposition 'in the lungs is to pre
vent the free admission of air into the air cells,
which causes a weekened vitality through the
entire sr stem. Then surely it is more rational
to esp.., greater good from medicines entering
the cavities of tlec lungs then those administered
through the 'kometch ; the patient will always
find the lungs free and the breathing easy, after
Itelheling remedies. Thus, Inhalation is a local
remedy, nevertheless it acts constitutionally and
with more power and certainty than remedies
administered by the stomach,. To prove the pow
erful and direct influence of this mode of ndmin
istration, chloroform inhaled will entirely de
stroy sensibility in n few Minutes, paralyzing
the entire nervous system, so that a limb tnny be
amputated without the slightest pain ; inhaling
the ordinary burning gas will destroy life in a
few liurs.
The inhalation of ammonia will rouse the sys
tem when fainting or apparently dead. The o
r dor of many of the medicines is pace ptible in
' the skin a lew minutes after being inhaled, and
mny ho immediately detected in the blood. A
convincing proof of the constitutional effects of
inhalation, is the fact that sickness is always pro•
hffleed by breathing lieu] air—is not this positive
evidence that proper remedies, carefully prepar
ed and judiciously administered thro' the lungs
should produce the happiest results 1 During
eighteen years' practice, many thousands suffer
ing from diseases of the lungs and fluent, have
been under my care, and I have efliseted many
remarkable cures, even alter the sufferers had
been pronotinced in the last stages, which fully
satisfies me that consunsistion is no longer n fit
test disease. My treatment of consumption is
original, and founded on long experience and a
thorough investigation. My perfect acquaintance
with the nature of tubercles, &e., enables me to
distinguish, readily, the various forms of disease
that simulate consumption, and apply the proper
remedies, rarely being mistaken even in it single
MC. This familiarity, in connection with cer
tain pathological and microscopic discoveries en
ethics me to relieve the lungs from the effects of
cont meted chests, to enlarga the chest, purify
the blood. impart to it renewed vitality, giving
energy and tone to the entire system.

London, graduate from ono of the most eminent
Colleges of the United States, and the greater
port of whose life has been spent in the first Ilos
pitals of London, Paris Philadelphia, and else
where, has effected 801110 of the most astonish
ing cures that were ever known, many troubled
with ringing in the head and ears when asleep,
grout nervousness, being alarmed at sudden
sounds, and bashfulness, with frequent blushing
attended sometimes with derangement of mind,

Certain Disease.
When the misguided and imprudent votary
of pleasure finds he has imbibed the seeds of this
' painful disease. it to too often happens that an
ill-timed sense of shame, or dread of discovery,
deters him front applying to those who from ea!-
! amnion and respectability, can alone befriend
him, delaying till the constitutional symptoms
of this horrid disease make their appearance,
such as ulcerated sore throat, diseased nose,
nocturnal pains in the head and limbs, dimness
of sight, deafness, nodes on the shin bones, and
arms, blotches on the hood, time and extremities,
progaessing with frightful rapidity, till nt last
sire palate of the month or the bone; of the nose
fall in, and the victim of this lawful disease bo
comes a horrid object of commiseration, tall
death puts a period to his dreadful sufferings, by
sending him to "that bourne front whence no
traveller returns,. To soda, therefore, Dr.
Johnston pledges himself to preserve the most
inviolable secrecy, and from his. extensive tame
