Milliners Trying to Cowhide a Man.—Yes.
terday morning the citizens of Jeffersonville
were aroused from their usual calmness by the
arrival of two female visitors from this city,
who appeared bent on mischief of some sort or
other. They p ut
. up at the Mansion House, and
one of them sent a polite invitation tc a promi
nent citizen of the place. that a lady wanted to
see him. The gentleman, a professional man,
promptly obeyed the summons, and on being
usheredinto the parlor, was greeted in no gen•
tle manner by one of the aforesaid ladies, who
attempted to cane him with a small rattan. He
seized the weapon, when he was assailed by the
other fair dame, in a sit/Jilin. tnatiner. He
succeeded in disarming her tuo, and that's all
we know of the affair. One of the assailing

own business has been that of loaning money,
which is done at from thirty to forty per cent.,
interest deducted, which makes quite a hole in

WITHIN THE REACH OF EVERY MAN.
Tnn RIDGWAY FARM COMPANY has made ar
rangements by which all who desire to settle or
purchase a home can do so.
The Farms consist of the best limestone soil
of the most superior quality for forming, in a ra
pidly improving place, into which an extensive
emigration is now pouring, The property is lo
cated in Elk County, Pennsylvania, in the midst
of a thriving population of some 10,000 popula
tion- The climate is perfectly healthy, and the
plague of the vest fever is unknown. I: also
has nn übundauca of the hest quality of Coal
and Iron. The price to buy it put is front $3 to

able $6 per month or 14 acres payable $4 per
month. Discount for every sum of $lOO and
under, paid in advance, discount of 5 per cent.
will be allowed, and for over $lOO a discount of
10 per cent.
fn considering the advantages of emigrating
to this locality the following are presented:
FIRST —The soil is a rich limestone, capable
of raising the heaviest crops, owing to which the
settlem't hail attained its present groat prosper
ity.
Sneostn—lt is the centre of the great North
West Cool Basin, .d is destine.i soon to be
come one of the greatest business places in the
State. It will supply the great Lake market,
(according to population and travel in the Un
ion.) It has five workable veins of the best Bi
tuminous Coal, amounting in the aggregate to
over 22 lent, which makes 22,000 tons of coal
under each acre. This will make the land of
inestimable value.
The eminent state geologist, Dr. Chas. T.
Jackson, of Boston, has made a geological sur
vey of the land and analyzed the soil, the iron
ore and the limestone. This report together
with maps will be furnished to inquirers.
FOURTH—Three railroads are laid out thro'
thin property. The Sunbury and Erie Railroad
gives us n market for our coal to the lakes—it
runs from Erie to Philadelphia. A large part
of this road has horn finished, and is now in
running order. A heavy three is non working
from Erie toward our land in the western direc
tion, the means for the completion of which has
been raised—it will soon be finished. The Al
legheny Valley Railroad connects us with New
York, Boston and Pittsburg. The Vonungo
Road connects us With the West.
There are already good Turnpike Roads run
ning through this property, various other roads
have been opened to accommodate the emigre
lion and settlement which has already taken
place.
There is no opportunity equal to it now oiler
ell to the man who wants to provide himself a
home in an easy way, and make a settlement
where he can live in prosperity and independence
in a CiiMILIC PEHFECTLY HEALTHY.
. .
No ease of the fever ever having been known
to occur in this settlement. It is not like going
to the backwoods of the West, among perhaps
intolerant people, whet° there is no society; no
churches,
or schools, where the price of land is
high, and where the emigrant, otter being used
to the healthiest climate in the world, has to en
dure sickness and pain, and perhaps ruins Ids
health and that of his family. But here is a
thriving settlement having three towns, contain
ing eburehes, schools, hotels, stores, saw• mills,
grist-mills r and everything desired. There is a
-sash market et hand. The lumber trade last
year amounted to over two hundred millions
lent of lumber. In a short time, owing to the
Coal, it will bacon., still more valuable as a
number of iron works and manufactories will
soon be started ; they are at peseta starting
them extensively as Warren. Even for those
who do not wish to go there, the payments are
such that they can easily buy limns to save their
families from want in the fawn, or to gain a
competence by the rise which will take place in
the value of their lands. By an outlay scarcely
missed, a substantial provision can he made.
Persons should make early application, apply
or write to E. Jeffries, Secretary, No. 135 Wal•
nut Street, below Firth, Philadelphia. Letters
carefully answered giving furl infarnnition.
Shares or tracts of land can be bought or se
cured by letter enclosing the tirst instalment of
live dollars, when the subscriber will he fur
