SALAMAND.. -" A reptile with a long tail,
having an affinity with lizards. The vulgar
story that a Salamander in able to endure fire is
a mistake."— Webster's Dictionary.
•
Webster is right ; the man o f facts
To falsehood would not pander;
Full well we know the fire will
Consume the Salamander.
Ai Reading, in the Keystone State,
The thine has had a trial ;
And that the "Salamander" burnt
In settled past denial.*
The Salamander was a pet,
On which its owners boasted :
And wagered it would stand the dame
Where HERRING would be roasted.
They placed it in a furnace hot,
And then with malice cruel
Piled up the hickory and the oak,
And tired pp the fuel.
The HERRING like a warrior stood,
Clothed in a coat of mail ;
'The flames assailed it right and left,
But could not start a scale.
The Salamander by its aide,
Clean to the ribs was toasted ;
And when its inwards were consumed,
The Hnsafsa was not roasted.
Thou let the reptile spread its tale,
A tale of lies and slander ;
The HERRING need not scorch a scale'
To &nen the SAIALIANDCH.
.After a fide and impartial trial, the safe
sit vans & Watson (Salamander) was first
I)pened, the safe being on be 'inside, and the
contents partially consumed, while the safe of
Farrel It Herring (Herring's Patent) were in
good condition, and no fire inside."—Extruct

lungs, for it gives us direct aceese to those ha ri

The reason that COll3 minion, and other disea

is simple, that it can be employed lip the yr 'in
