The American Republican Ticket
The Convention which assembled in
Harrisburg on the 25th ultimo, to nomi
nate a State Ticket, to be supported by all
opposed to the principles and policy of the
National Administration, was one of the
most intelligent and harmonious bodies that
ever met together in our Commonwealth. 1
It was composed of the "first men" of
Pennsylvania ; and the perfect unanimity
and good feeling which characterized the
whole proceedings, argue the most prom- 1
icing results. The ticket placed in nomi
nation is unexceptionable, and should meet
with the hearty approbation of every one
sincerely and fervently opposed to fraud
and oppression, and in favor of human
rights, American institutions and American
liberty. David Wilthot of Bradford cowl
ty, is the unanimous choice of the Conven:
tion for Governor. Mr. Wilmot is too •A ell i
known throughout the length and breadth 1
of the Union to need any mention from us.
But we employ the language of the illus.
trious Webster, and say of Wilmot, as he
etands identified with the platform of tree•
dom of 1856,—"There he is, behold him
for yourselves." He needs no encomiums.'
In ability and statemanship, he is without !
a superior in the State ; and his name, 1. )
dentified as it is, with the eternal princi• !
plea of justice, human liberty and human
rights, will be a tower of strength. His
triutnpham election is an event beyond a \
peradventure ; and whilst we cordially,
heartily, and without reserve endorse him
we cannot but praise the wisdom of the
honorable body in thus selecting the right
man in the - right time ; for, we look upon
the nomination of Mr. Wilmot, as a dir-et

ty of Pennsylvania ; as a test, to prove
which is the stronger party in our Com
monwealth—that of freedom and the right
or of slavery, broken promisee and pledg•

Mr. Milheard, who has been nominated
by the Convention for Canal Commissioner,
was a member of the last Congress from
Philadelphia. His career in Congress pro.
ved so satisfactory to both the Republicans
and Americans of his district, that they re
nominated and supported him heartily
Mr.Millward was a member of the Amer
ican party, supported Fillmore and Done'.
son, and united in the effort to carry the
State for the Union electoral ticket. He is
a man of capacity, firmness of purpose,
and well calculated to do justice to the busi
ness of the Canal Board.
The Convention has nominated two em.
inently suitable candidates for Judges of
the Supreme Court. Mr. Veech in one of
the ablest lawyers to the western part of
the State. Several years ago he was the
choice of a number of western members of
the Legislature for United States Senator,
a position which be would have filled with
dignity and usefulness. Mr. Lewis is one
of the men of mark to Chester county; is
a person of clear, forcible mind, enlarged
acquirements, and very decided talent
Two such judges as James Veech and Jo
seph J. Lewis, would add very materially
to the judicial strength of the present
bench.
Altogether the Convention has framed a
ticket which should receive a hearty sup ,
port. Old nuntingdon sends greeting to
her sister counties, and next fall will roll
up a majority for the Union ticket, which
will utontsh the natives, strike terror into
the hearts of slavery extensionists, and
cheer the hearts of liberty loving patriots.
