Cottage by the hillside—
Time, nigh unto dark
Dorothy beside the tiro,
Waiting tier her spark.
Old man by the chimney
Reading Boston paper
Old lady near the table
Making Sal a cap, or
Some other darned peculiar kind of garment.
Very cord wit' out, and
• Wind a shrieking—howling
Owls up in the orchard—
Out, perhaps, a fooling.
Rap, rap, at the kitchen door—
Dorothy looks pleasant ;
"Jonathan, - ehe whispers sly,
"Rot me if it isn't,

Door is open—" Jonathan I

Why how do you do ?"
"Well, Dorothy, Tm party well,
A seein' how it's you."
Old man stops hie reading,
Old lady stops the sewing ;
Both remark to Jonathan,
"Wall neoW, how it's blowing ;
There's going to be some tall weather yet, I
meow."
Salutations over ;
Jonathan is mum ;
Wishes over sundry times
That he was to hum.
Old folks getting sleepy,
'Gin to nod the head ;
Dorothy suggests that they
Had better go to bed—
And a very prodigious grin lightheth up Jona.

Old folks snoring sonndly,
Young folks close together
Jonathan and Dorothy
Talking 'bout the weather.
Jonathan is thinking
How to pop the question; •
But his heart is thumping so
Can hardly keep his vest on,
Aod his tongue cleaveth uuto the roof of his
mouth.
Dorothy looks slyly—
Knows there's something coming ;
Looks around at Jonathan—
Be feels much like running.
"Dearest Dorothy!" he says—
And his heart beats faster—

Years have passed away, and
Down within the valley,
Far away from city,
Street, or dirty alley,
Stands a little cottage,
White as snow in March ;
Jonathan and Dorothy
Sitting on the porch.
And a halt.dozen whitc•hcaded youngsters ar.

The Late Murder at Altoona.
The recent shocking murder at Alton
ma, of which a brief notice has already
appeared in our columns continues to
cause a great excitement in the district
where it was perpetrated. After our pa.
per went to press on Saturday, Mr. Mc
?illiater, proprietor of the Eagle Hotel, re
ceived a telegraphtc despatch Irons Altoo
na, asking for information in regard to the
personal appel ranee, dress &c., of David
McKinney, who put up at the above
named hutel in company with 5. L. Nor
cross,. the murdered man. It will be rec
olle..ted that McKinney and Norcruse left
on the Pensylvania Railroad to the 9:30
P. m. train on Thursday. The despatch
mates that the deceased and another man
were seen passing through Altoona after
the arrival of the train, and that the stran
ger has not since been seen or heard from
A razor WAS found beside the body of Nor
cross, which would indicate that he had
committed euioide. About twenty dollars
and a silver watch were found in a carpet
sack lying near the body.
These circumstances tend to the conclu
sion that neither robbery nor murder had
been committed. Hut the most important
fact conveyed in the despatch is.' that
the head of the d, cased bea a en vista.
liable evidence of having been broken
with a club, and a club was found near the
body. It is plain, then, that a murder has
beau committed. A lunatic could not
break his skull with a club, and then cut
his throat from ear to ear, or vice vent,—
But it appears after all, that there was no
evidence of the insanity of young Nor.
cross, excepting that McKinney told Mr.
McMaster that he was subject to fits of
insanity; that he (McMaster) nerd not be
surprised if he heard a noise in their room
at night, as Norcross sometimes got up,
and butted hie head against the wall ; and
that he tried to destroy himself during
those fits.
Mr. McMaster and others at the Eagle
Hotel never saw any positive signs of in•
sanity with Norcross, but he was remark
ed to be in delicate health. He paid the
Hotel bills of himself and McKinney. and
the clerk saw in his possession at the time
two twenty dollar gold pieces, and other
money. The citizens of Altoona are gen.
rally excited in consequence of the mur.
der, and offer a reward of five hundred
dollars for the arrest of McKunney. All
the circumstances connected with the bloody
tragedy, point to McKinney as the titer.
darer. His story as to the insanity of the
deceased, the cutting of the throat. the
finding of the razor, twenty dollars and
watch, were no doubt part of a deeply bud
but fortunately unsuccessful scheme to
ward oft suspicion. But "murder will nut "
and McKinney like the first murderer fled.
The club was there to give the lie to the
razor, and the missing gold (notwithsand
ins the twenty dollars and silver watch
which remained.) explains the motives
which induced the perpetratir n of the hor.
rads and atrocious died..--Pitic. Chroni•

I never sold a bottle of it but that sold another;
after a trial it always speaks for itself. There

me surprising; first it grows in our pastures in
some places quite plentiful and vet its value
has never been known until I discovered it in
1846—second that it should cure all kinds of

In order to give sonic idea of the sudden rise
and great popularity of the discovery. I will
state that in April, 1853, 1 peddled It and sold

over one thousand per day of it.
Some of the wholesale Druggists who bare
been in business twenty and thirty years, say
that nothing in the moods of patent medicines
was ever like it. Them is a universal praise

In my own practice I always kept it strictly
for humor—but since its introduction as n gen

BALTIMORE LOCK HOSPITAL.
DOC, ZOR JOHNSTON,
TE . founder of this Celebrated Institution,
offers the most certain, speedy, and only
effectual remedy in the wet Id for Bleats, Stric
tures, Seminal Weakness, Pain in the Loins,
Constitutional Debility, Impotency, Weakness
of the Back and Limbs, Affections of the Kid—
neys, Palpitation of the Heart, Dyspepsia, Ner
vous Irritability, Disease of the head, Throat,
Nose or Skin ; and fill those serious and melan
choly disorders arising from the destructive
habits of Youth, which destroys both body and
mind. These secret and solitary practices ore
more fatal to their victims than the song of the
Byrens to the mariner Ulysses, blighting their
most brilliant hopes of anticipations, rendering
marriage, Sc., impossible.
Young Men,
especially, *ho have become the viethns of Sol
itary Vice, that dreadful and destructive habit,
which annually sweeps to an untimely grave
thousands of young men of the most exalted
talents, and brilliant intellect, who might oth
erwise have entranced listening senates with
the thunders of eloquence, or waked to ecstasy
the living lyre, may call with all confidence.
Marriage
Married persons, or young mon contempla
ting marriage, being aware of physical weak
ness, organic debility, detbrmities, Fa., should
immediately consult Dr. Johnston.
lie who places himself under the care of Dr.
Johnston may religiously confide in his honor as
a gentleman, and confidently rely upon his skill
as a physician.
Organic Weakness.
immediately cured, and tbil vigor restored,
This disease is the penalty must frequently
paid by those who have become the victim of
improper indolgencies. Yt.ung persons are too
apt to commit excesses from not being aware of
the dreadful consequence that may ensue.—
Now, who that understands the subject will pre
tend to deny that the pouPtlr of Procreation is
lost sooner by those Silting into improper habit
than by the prudent. Besides being deprived
of the pleasure of healthy offspring, the most se
rious and destructive symptoms to mind and bo
dy arise. The system becomes deranged , the
physical and mental powers weakened, nervous
debility, dyspepsia, palpitation of the heart, in
digestion, a wasting of the frame, cough symp
toms of Consumption.

Member of the Royal College of Surgeons,
London, graduate from one of the most eminent
Colleges of the United States, and the granter
part of whose life hoe been spent in the tint Hos
pitals of London. Paris Philadelphia, and else
where, has effected some of the most astonish
ing cures that were•erer known, many troubled
with ringing in the hand and cars when asleep,
great nervousness, being alarmed at sadden
sounds, and bashfulness, with frequent blushing
attended sometimes with derangement of mind,.
were cured immediately.
A Cerinin Lisease
When the misguided and imprudent votary
of pleasure finds lw has imbibed the seeds of this
painful disease. it to too often happens that an
ill-tinted sense of shame, or dread of fi iscovery,
fluters him from applying to those who from ed
ucation and respectability, can alone befriend
him, delaying till the constitutional symptoms
of this horrid disease make their appearance,
such its ulcerated sore throat, diseased no.,
nocturnal pains in tho head and limbs, dimness
al sight, deafness, nudes on the shin hones, and
arms, blotches on the head, taco and extremities,
progfessing with frightful rapidity, till at last
the palate of the mouth or the bones, of nose
fall in, and the victim of this awful disease be
comes a horrid object of commiseration, till
death puts a period to his dreadful sullerings by
sending him to "that bourne from whence no
traveller returns," To such, therefore, 1)r.
Johnston pledges himself to T.reserve the most
inviolable secrecy, and from Isis extensive Kite
ties in the first Hospitals of Europe and Ameri
ca, Ise can confidently recommend a safe and
speedy care to the unfortunate victim of this hot -
rid disease.
It is a melancholy filet that thousands fall vic•
tims to this horrid disease owing to the unekil•
fulness of ignorant pretenders who by the use of
that deadly poison Mercury, ruin the cons.i
tutiom, and either send the unfortunate sufferer
to an untimely grave, or make tho residue of his
life mil erable.
Take Particular . Notice,
Dr. J.. addresses nil those who hare injured
ihemseires by improper indulgetteies.
These are some of tho sad' and melancholy
effects produced by curly habits of youth, viz :
Weakness of the Back and Limbs, .Purrs in the
head, Dimness of Sight, Loss of Muscular pow.
or, Palpitation of the Ileurt Dyspepsia, Nervous
Irritability, Derangements of the Digestive
Functions, lenoral Debility Symptoms of Con
sumption, &z.
MENTALLY—The fearful effects on the mind
are much to ho dreaded; Loss of memory, Con.
lesion oft leas, Depression of Spirit, Evil For
hoilings, Aversion to Society, Self Distrust,
Love of Solitude, Timidity, &c., are some oldie
evils produced.
Thousands of persons of all ages, can now
lodge what is the cause of their declining health.
Losing their vigor, becoming weak, pain and
emaciated, have singular appearance about.tho
eyes, tough and symtems of consumption.
Dr. Johnston's Invigorating Reme
dy for organic Weaknebs
By this great and important remedy, weakness
of the organs is speedily cured and full vigor re
stored. Thousands of the moat debilitated and
nervous, who had lost all hope, have been im
mediately relieved. All Impediments to Mar
riage, Physical or Mental Disqualification, Nor
.. Tremblings and Weakness,
or exhaustion of the most fearful kind, speedily
cured by Doctor Johnston.
•
Young nen,
who have injured themselves by a certain prat
.tiec indulged in when alone—n habit ftequently
learned from evil companions, or at school—the
effects of which are nightly felt, even when a
sleep, and i not cured renders niarrirge impos
sible, and destroys both mind and body, should
apply immediately.
What to pity that a young man, the hope °ilia
country, and the darling of his par.erits should be
snatched from all prospects and enjoyments of
lite by the consequence of deviating from the path
of nature and indulging Inn certain secret habit
Bach persons before contemplating
Marriage.
should reflect that a sound mind and °ody are
the most neeessury requisites to promote counu
bhd happiness. Indeed without these, the Jour
ney through life becomes a weary pilgrimage,
the prospect hourly darkens to the view; the
mind becomes shadowed with despair, and filled
with the melancholy reflectimethat the happiness
of another becomes blighted with our own.
