ARMITAGE'S
Electro-Magnet Lightning Rods.
AFTER many years' close investigation and
numerous experiments, the Patentee takes
pleasure in informing the public that he has arri
ved at the true principles of protecting families,
dwellings and property from the destructive in
fluence of Lightning. Ihe calamities that
every City, Town, Village and Country• falls vic
tim to annually, through the gross negligence of
its inhabitants, is beyond calculation, especially
when the remedy is so easy to obtain—this is
found in Armitage's Patent Magnetic
Lightning Rods, and in this alone. This
Rod has been examined by the .most scientific
gentlemen in the world—Profossors Anturtrie,
Johnson, \\Tailor and many others that have ex
amined them, recommend and speak of them in
the highest terms of approbation, and have pro
nounced them the only safe roils in use in this or
any other country, for the protection of Lives and
Property. One advantage is to divide and throw
back a part of the electric fluid harmless to the
clouds; in time of n stroke this enables the rod
to conduct that portion of fluid that belongs to
the earth without the slightest danger of leaving
the conductor. This roil has many other advan
tages over the old bno. The only place of man

Recommendations.
PIIILADA.. Aug. 13, 1847.
I have this day carefully inspected a conductor
or Lightning Rod, with vane and index, erected
by Mr. Thomas Armitage, on Bellevue House,
Gloucester, and have no hesitation in saying that
it is not only the best that I have ever seen, but
that it is the only one I have yet examined that
is constructed on strictly scientific princirles. It
is with much pleasure that I recommend this
conductor to the attention of owners of buildings.
H. MeMURTRIE.
I um well satisfietkihnt the Magnetic Lightning
Rod, mnnuflicturedls3; Mr. Thomas Armitage, of
Philadelphia, is dui best that has ever been made.
I hits.° spent several years in the study of the laws
of electricity and magnetism, and have no hesita
tion in saying that these Rods are constructed
upon the only principle of safety. The electric
shock is received and dispersed by the magnet at
the top of the rod, and it would he impossible, ,
according to the laws of attraction and repulsion,
fora building to be injured by a stroke of light
ning when protected by one of these rods. I
have been acquninted with Mr. Armitage for sev
eral years, and before he commenced the mm
facture of these rods I examined the principle on
which they are constructed, and felt convinced
that their adoption would be attended with com
plete success. The increasing demand for these
rods, and the extensive sales in all parts of the
cannery, is ample commendation of their utility
and superiority.

The following extract is taken from an editori
nl in the Germantown Telegraph, edited by Major
Fimin t
"The bogus rod placed upon our dwelling we
have had taken down; and another crated by Mr.
AIIMITAOE, to which we would call the attention
of our farmers and readers generally. It is put
up on true scientific principles, and is a rod that
has been approved by the highest authority, and
will bear the most thorough examination. Those
who have been deceived, as we have been, should
lose no time in having a proper protection against
lightning, substituted. The cost is a mere bag
atelle when compared with the entire snfety of
our houses and barns against this destructive ele
ment. Mr. ARMITAGE'iI advertisement will be
found in the columns of this paper; and we feel
as though we were performing an imperious duty
to the community, by thus inviting to it general
attention.. ,

Mr npArt Stu t After a trial of many weeks, it
affords me groat pleasure to inform you that I
am highly delighted with the lightning rod you
placed upon my house at Bustleton. As far as
my chemical knowledge enables me to perform
an opinion, I am satisfied you have developed
the correct principles in the adaptation 01 rods to
protect property frowlstruction by lightning; as
soon as the advantages of your arrangements are
understood, I am convinced that few persons will
be found so reckless as to fail to avail themselves
of the protection afforded by your rods. Wishing
you all success in your enterprise,

AYER'S PILLS.
ARE YOU SICK ?
Then you can't be cured too soon. Don't de
lay until your complaint is incurable, and theu
mourn when it is too late. Four fifth of all the
diseases which people the church-yards might
be cured by Ayer's Cathartic Pills, if taken in
season. Don't go dragging through the Spring,
faint sleepy and Ustless, because your blood to
loaded with bile. Don't wear the bead-ache,
Heartburn, and their kindred disorders, because
your stomach is foot. Don't parade yourself
around the world, covered with Pimples, Blotch
es, Ulcers, Sores and all or any of the unclean
diseases of the skin, because your systom wants
cleansing. Don't show yourself about, lean,
haggard, all caved in, because your stomach and
bowels need strengthening into healthy action.—
Ayers Pills set these things right as surely as
water quenches fire. They purify the body and
blood, and restore their functions into healthy
activity which you can feel as quick as they aro
taken. They are the one great medical wonder
of this age, recognized by all who know their
virtues, and many thousands know them. Take

Baltimore Street, east side up the steps. ifi'Bo
particular in obtaining the name and number, or
you will mistake the place.
A cure warranted, or no charge made, in from
one to two days.
TAKE NOTICE.—Dr. Johnston's office is in his
dwelling, op the stops. His very extensive prac
tice is a sufficient guarantee, that he is the only I
propel physician to apply to.
Dr. Johston, member of the Royal College of
Surgeons. London, graduate from one of the
most eminent Colleges of the United States, and
the greater part of whose life has been spent in
the:llospitals of London, Paris Philadelphia, and
elsewhere, has effected some of the most oaten- I
fishing cures that were ever known, many trou
bled with ringing in the ears and head when
asleep, great nervousness, being alarmed at slid- I
den sounds, and bashfulness, with frequent blush
ing attended sometimes with derangement of ;
mind, were cured immediately.
A CERTAIN DISEASE.—It is a melancholy fact ;
that thousands fall victims to this horrid disease
owing to the unskilfulness of ignorant pretenders I
who by the use of that deadly poison Mercury,
ruin the Constitution, causing the most serious
symptoms of that dreadful disease to make their
appearance, such as affections of the head, nose,
throat, skin, etc., progressing with frightful ra
pidity till death puts a period to their dreadful
suffering, by sending them io that Bourne whence
no traveler retnrns.
TAKE PAIMCULAR NOTICE.--YOUng KICK who
have injured themselves by n certain practice in
dulged in when alone—a habit frequently learned
from evil companions, or at school—the effects
of which are nightly felt, even when asleep, and
if not cured renders marriage impossible, and de
stroys both mind and body.
What a pity that a young man, the hope aids
country, and the darling of his parents should be
snatched from all prospects and enjoyments of
life by the consequence ofileviating from the path
of nature and indulging In a certain secret habit.
Such persons before contemplating Marriage,
should reflect that a sound mind and body aro
the most necessary requisites to promote connu
bial happiness, Indeed without these, the jour
ney through life becomes a weary pilgrimage,
the prospect hourly darkens to the view; the
mind becomes shadowed with despair, and tilled
with the melancholy reflection, that the happiness
of another becomes blighted with our own.
. CONSTITUTIONAL DEBILITY.—Dr. J. address
es young men, and all who have injured them
; selves by private and improper indulgence.
IMPUISSANA.—Those aro some of the sari and
melancholy effects produced by early habits of
youth, Vim Weakness of the Back and Limbs,
Parrs in the head, Dimness of Sight, Loss of
Muscular power, Palpitation of the Heart Dys
, pepsia, Nervous Irritability, Detangemonts of the
Digestive Functions, General Debility Symptoms
oLconsumption, &c.
'MENTALLY—The fearful effects on the mind are
much to be dreaded; Loss of memory, Confusion
of ideas, Depression of Spirit, Evil Forbodings;
Aversion to Society, Self Distrust, Love of Soli
tude, &e., are some of the evils produced.
Thousands of persons of all ages, can now judge
what is the cause of their declining health. Los
ing their vigor, becoming weak, pale nod emacia
ted, have singular appearance about the eyes,
tough .d symtoms of consumption.
Married persons, or those contemplating mar
riage, being aware of physical weakness, should
immediately consult Dr. J. and be restored to per
fect health. Office, No. 7, South Frederick-ft,

Skin Diseases Speedily Curod,
To Snussuens.—The many thousands cured
at this Institution within the last ten years, and
the numerous important Surgical Operations
performed by 1)r. J.,witnessed by the Reporters cf
the papers, and many other persons, notices of
which have appeased again and again before the
public, is a sufficient guarantee that else afflicted
will fled a skillful and honorable physician.
As there are so many ignorant and worthless
,quacks advertising themselves as Physicians,ruin
lig the health at the afflicted Dr. Johnston would
to those unacquainted with his reputation that
his Credentials or Diplomas always hang in Isis
office.

FEVER AND AGUE CURE,
For the prevention and Cure of Intei:mittent
and Remittent Fevers, Fever and Agae, Chills
and Fever. Dumb Ague, General Debility Night
Sweats, and all other forms of disease which have
a common origin in Malaria or Miasma.
This is a natural antidote which will entirely
protect ally resident or travail° r even in the
most sickly or swampy localities, from any Ague
or Bilious disease whatever, or any injury from
constantly inhaling Malaria or Miasma.
It will instantly chock the Ague in persons
who have suffered for any length of time, from
one day to twenty , ears, so that they need never
to have another chill, by continuing in use ac
cording to directions. The patient at once begins
to recover appetite and strength, and continues
until a permanent and radical cure is effected.
Ono or two bottles will answer for ordinary
cases ; some may require more. Directions prin
ted German, French and Spanish, accompany
each bottle. Price ono dollar. Liberal dis
counts made to the trade.

EVIDENCE OF SAFETY.
Now York, June 11, 1855.
"I have made a chemical examination of
"Rhode's Fever and Ague Cure," or Antidote
to Malaria, and have tested it for Krseuic, Mer
cury, Quinine, and Strychnine, but have not
found a particle of either in it, nor have I found
any substance in its composition that would
prove injurious to the constitution.

EVIDENCE OF MERIT.
Lewisburg, Union Co., Ya., May 2, 1855.
Mr. J. A. Rhodes—Dear Sir The box of
medicine you sent me was duly received on the
11th et April. I have sold about one half of it,
and so far the people who have used it, and six
of the roses were of long standing ; my sister.
who hod it for five or six years back, and could
never get it stopped, except by Quinine, and
that only as long as she would take, is now, I
think, entirely cured by your remedy.
C. R. MoGINGLY."
CAUTION TO AGUE SUFFERERS.
Take no more Arsenic, Tonics, Mercury, qui
nine, rebrifuges, Strychnine, or Anti-Periodms,
of any kind. The well-known inefficiency of
these noxious poisons proves them to be the off
spring of falso medical principles, or of mercena
ry quacks. The only remedy in existence that
is both sure and harmless is
RHODES' FEVER AND AGUE CURE.

Three to four bottles aro warranted to cure tha

Five to eight bottles will cure the worst case
of scrofula.
A benefit is always experienced from the first
bottle, and a perlect cure is warranted when the
above quantity is taken.
Reader, I peddled over a thousand bottles of
this in the vicinity of Boston. I knew the effect
of it in every ease. So sure as water will extin
guish fire, so sure will this cure humor. I never
sold a bottle of it but that sold another; after a
trial it always speaks for itself. There are two
things about this herb that appear to me surpri
sing ; first that it grows in our pastures, in some
places quite plentiful, and yet its Valle hue never
been known until I discovered it in 184 G—second
that it should cure all kinds of humor.
In order to give some idea of tho sudden rise
and groat popularity of the discovery. I will
state that in April, 1853, I peddled it and sold
about six bottles per day—in April, 1854, I sold
over one thousand per day of it.
Some of the wholesale Druggists who have
been in business twenty and thirty years, say
that nothing in the annals of patent medicines
was ever like it. There is a universal praise of
it from all quarters.
In my own practice I always kept tt strictly fur
humors—but since its introduction as n general
bluffly medicine, great end wonderful virtues
have been found in it that I never suspected.
Sevens! cases of epileptic fits—a disease which
WAS always considered incurable, have been cu
red bye lbw bottles. 0, what a mercy if it will
prove effectual in all eases of that dreadful mal
ady—there are lint few who have more of it than
I have.
I know of several yeit a k Dropy, nil of whom
aged people cored , or the various disea
ses of the Liver, Sink headache, Dyspepsia,
Asthma, Fever and Ague, Pain in the Side, Dis
eases of the Spine, and partienlarly in diseases
of the Kidneys, &e., the discovery has done more
good than any medicine over known. .
