TWENTY YEARS AGOG
I've wandered to the village, Tom; I've eat be.
neath the tree,
Upon the school-house play-ground, which shel
tered yon and me;
Bnt none were there to greet me, Tom; and few
were left to know,
That played with us upon the grass, some twenty
years ago.
The grass is just as green, Toni; bare-footed boys
at play,
Were sporting just as we did then, with spirits
just as gay;
But the "Master" sleeps upon the hill, which, coat
ed o'er with snow,
Afforded us a sliding place, just twenty years ago.
The old school house is altered some; the bench
es are replaced
13y now ones, very like the same our penknives
had defaced;
Ent -the same old bricks arc in the wall; the bell
swings to and fro,
Its music just the same, dear Tom, 'twos twenty
years ago.
The boys were playing some old game, beneath
that same old tree;
I do forget the name just now—you've played the
same with me;
On that same spot, 'twas played with knives, by
tnrowing so and so;
The leader had n task to do—there, twenty years
ngo.
The river's running just as still; the willows on
its side
Are larger than they were, Tom; the stream ep•
pears lesa wide—
But the grape vine swing is ruined now, where
once we played the beau,
And swung our sweethearts—"pretty girls" jitst
twenty years ago.
The spring that bubbled %teeth the bill, close by
the spreading beech,
Is very low—'twee once so high, that we could al-
most roach;
And, kneeling down ,to get a drink, dear Tom, I
started so.
To coo how much that I am changed, since twen
ty yours ago.
Near the spring, upon an elm, you know I cut
Tour name,
Your sweetheart's just beneath it, Tom, and you
did mine the same;
Some heartless wretch had pooled the hark—'twas
dying sure but slow,
Just as that one, whose name was cut, died twen
ty years ago.
My lids have long been dry, Tom, but tears came
in my eyes;
I thought of her I lured so well—thosa early bro•
ken ties;
I visited the old church-yard, and took some flow.
ers to strew
Upon the graves of those we loved, some twenty
years ago.
Borne are in the chnrch-yard laid—stone sleep be.
neath the aca,
But few are left of our old class, excepting you
and me;
And when ot:n time shall come, Tom, amt when
we're called to go,
I hope they'll lay us when we played, just twen
ty years ago.
HOBBS AGAIN.—A London letter aaye :
American skill has onco more triumphed
in England, and in tl is ma• ner : The di
rectors of a well known Insurance Office,
in Moorgate street, had assembled at their
rooms last week to hold an important an
nual meeting. When the books and papers
of the company were called for, the Secre
tary could not find the key of the large
vault where they were kept. After an un
successful search, Mr. Chubb, the maker
of the large iron door and the lock was sent
for, and asked if he had a key that would
open the lock. He replied in the negative.
He was asked then it he could pick the lock.
He again replied in the negative, and rath
er indignant withal, at the insinuation that
his celebrated locks could be picked! The
directors asked what was to bo done. Mr.
Chubb answered that the only method by
which the books and papers could be pro
duced was to cut the door down. The Ili
rectors would not consent to such a propo
aition, and Mr. Chubb left the premises.—
A message was dear tolled to Cheapside,
for the American, Hobbs, who sent one of
his workmen, with instructions to take We
pressioEs in wax of the keyhole a the look.
The man departed, and in a few minutes
returned with the impression. Mr. Hobbs
then selected a few simple instruments,
and aeotnpanied his workman to the Insu
rance Office. After operating upon C hubb's
lock ten minutes only, the bolt was turned,
the door was opened, and all the books and
papers were placed before the Board of Di
rectors, to their utter astonishment.
Human Ingenuity.
In the formation of a single locomotive
Steam Engine, there ar no-fewer than 5,416
pieces to be put together, and these require
to be as accurately adjusted as the wL rks

least 202 pieces, employing probably 215
persons, distributed among 40 trades, to
say nothing of the tool makers for all
these. --Scientific anserican.
