Horse Racing in Italy. The following eleserir tion of horse racing in Italy is taken from McGill's Travels : The horses run without riders, and to urge thorn on, little bells with sharp points in them are hung to their sides, which, when the horse is employed in the race, act like spurs. They have also pieces of foil fastened to the hinder parts, which, as the animal rushes through the air, make a loud rustling noise, and frightens them forward. I was mush amused with the horses at An cons. A gun is fired when they first start, that preparations may be made to receive them at the other end. When they have run half way, another gun is fired, and a third when they arrive at the goal. To ascertain without dispute which wins the race, across the winning post, a thread is stretched dipped in red lead: which the victor breaking it, leaves a red mark on his chest, and this red mark is decisive.— To guard the course a great number of Roman soldiers under arms were arrain ged on each side of it, from one end to the other. The morning after the first race I was sitting with the Governor when a mess age arrived from the General requesting that the race might be deferred till anoth er day, as he thought the weather too cold to put the troops under arms. The Governor replied to him: "That as the weather was not too cold for the ladies, he thought it was not too cold for the Roman soldiers." I have seen on a day which threatened rain, a guard of Romans turned out, every one of whom had an umbrella under his arm, the drummer and fifer alone excepted. ABSENCE OF MlND.—Professor Reyn olds, who once taught the B— Academy, was the most absent minded man about ev ery day affairs I ever saw. His mind was all wrapped up with books, and he oared no more about what the world was up to than a pig cares about the Hottentots. One morning his wife, who by the way, differed vastly from her spouse in this re spect, was reading aloud from the paper an account of a horrible murder. A man had, as the paper said, deliberately killed his whole family, consisting of some dozen members, with an axe. Mrs. Reynolds laid down the paper with the exclamation— .. What a wretch !" "Yes,' said the husband, in a very quiet tone,. looking up from bis book, 'he should be talked to." THE MODEL LADY puts her children out to nurse and tends lap dogs; she lies in bed till noon, wears paper soled shoes, and pinches her waist; gives the piano fits, and forgets to pay her milliner; cuts her poor relations, and goes to church when she has a new bonnet; turns a cold shoulder to her husband and flirts with his "friend;" never saw a thimble, dont know a darning needle from a crow-bar; wonders where puddings grow; eats ham and eggs in private, and dines off a pigeon's leg in public; runs mad after the latest fashion; dotes on Byron; adores any fool who grins behind a mus tache, and when asked the age of her youngest child, replies, "Don't know, in dud; ask Betty !" THE LUNOB.—On examination, the lunge will be found full of inumerablo little holes, like a sponge. These holes are the cells into which the air enters when we breathe. So great is their number, they have been calculated to amount to 170,000,000, for ming a surface thirty times greater than the human body. Every one of these cells is provided with a net work of blood ves sels, by which means every portion of the blood is broght into immediate contact with the air. When this great amount is taken into consideration, we shall at once feel bow necessary it is to supply pure air to the lungs with every breath we breathe. Old Thomas Fuller, who was a very lively writer, but rather addicted to pun ning, was occasionally repaid his pun, with interest. He was exceedingly corpulent, and as he was out riding with a friend na med Sparrowhawk, he could not resist the opportunity of cracking a joke upon him. "What is the difference between an owl and a Sparrow-hawk?" asked he. "An owl is fuller in the head, fuller in the bo dy, and fuller all over," replied his friend. GLORIOUS TIME FOR THE LADIES.—In the reign of Queen Margaret of Scotland, the Parliament passed an act that any maid en lady of high or low degree should have the liberty to chose for a husband the man on whom she set her fancy. If a man re fused to marry her, he was heavily fined, according to the value of his worldly pos sessions. The only ground of exemption was previous betrothal. An entirely new feature was introduced at an Agricultural fair held at Batavia, N. Y. Nine fair equestriennes, attended by their cavaliers, entered the ring, and com peted for the honors awarded to the best horsemanship. The first prize was a sil ver cup. If you wish to drive a out nail into seas oned oak timber, and not have it break or bend, just have a little oil near by, and dip the end of the nail into it before driving, and it will never fail to go. London, graduate from one of the most eminent Colleges of the United States, and the greater part of whose life ties beets spent in the Hospitals of London, Paris, Philadelphia, and elsewhere, has effected some of the most as tonishing cures that were ever known, many troubled with ringing in the ears and head when asleep, great nervousness, being alarmed at sud den sounds, and bashfulness, with frequent blush ing, attended sometimes with derangement of mind, were cured immediately. A CERTAIN DISEASE.—It is a melancholy facts that thousands fall Victims to this horrid dis ease owing to the Unskillfulness of ignorant pre tenders, who by the use of that deadly poison Mercury, ruin the Constitution, causing the most serious symptoms of this dreadful disease to make their appearance, etch as affections of the head, throat, nose, skin, etc., progressing with fright ful rapidity till death puts a period to their dread- lel suffering, by sending them to that Bourne wienee no traveler returns. TAKE PARTICULAR NOTICE.—Young men who have injured themselves by a certain practice indulged in when alone—a habit frequent ly learned from evil companions, or at school—the effects of which are nightly felt, even when asleep, and if not cured renders marriage impossible, and destroys both mind and body. What a pity that a young tnan, the hope of his country, and the darling of his parents should be snatched from all prospects and enjoyments of life by the consequences of deviating from the path of nature and indulging in a certain secret habit.— Such persons before contemplating. MARRIAGE, should reflect that a sound mind and hotly are the most necessary requisitsts to promote connubial happiness. Indeed, without these, the journey through life becomes a weary pilgrimage. the prospect hourly darkens to the view; the mind becomes shadowed with dispair, and filled with the melancholy reflection, that the oappi-ness of another becomes blighted with our awn. CONSTITUTIONAL DEBILITY.—Dr. J. hp, ruses young men, and all who have injured htemselvei by private and improper indulgence. IMPUISSANE.—These are some of the sad and melancholy effects produced by early habits of youth, viz: Weakness of the Back and Limbs, Pains in the head. Diinuess of Sight, Loss of Muscular Power, Palpitation of the Heart Dys peps Nervous Irritability, Delangements of the Digestive Functions, General Debility Symptoms of Consumption, &c. kenta/V—Th'e fearful effects on the mind are much to be dreaded; Loss of Memory, Confusion of ideas, Depression of Spirit, Evil Forbudings, Aversion to Society, Self Distrust, Love of Soli tude. &e. ure sonic of the evils produced. Thousands orpersons of all ages, can now judge what is the cause of their declining halt!). Philadelphia. Their power over the above diseases is not ex celled—if equalled—by any other preparation in the United States, as the cures attest, in many cases after skilful physicians had failed. These Bitters are worthy the attention of inva lids. Possessing great virtues in the rectification of diseases of the Liver and lesser glands, exer cising the must searching powers in weakness and affections of the digestive organs, they are withal, safe, certain and pleasant. READ AND BE CONVINCED. From the " Boston Bee." The/editor said, Dec. 22nd Dr. lioelland's Celebrated German Bitters for the cure of Lives Complaint, Jaundice, Dyspepsia, Chronic or Nervous Debility, is deservedly one of the most popular medicines of the duy. These . Bitters have been used by thousands, and a friend at our elbow says ho had himself received an effec tual and permanent cure of Liver Complaint from the use of this remedy. We are convinced that, in the use of these Bitters, the patient constantly gains strength and vigor—a fact worthy of great consideration. They are pleasant in cast and smell, and can be used by persons with the most delicate stomachs with safety, under any circum stances. We are speaking from experience, and to the afflicted we advise their use. "SCOTT'S WEEKLY," one of the best Literary papers published, said Aug. 1 - 100FLAND'S IiZIMAN BITTERS, manu factured by Dr. Jackson, are now recommended by some of the most prominent members of the faculty us au article of much efficacy in cases of female weakness. As such is the case, we wc,ii; advise all mothers to obtain a bottle, and thus save themselves 1111101 sickness. Persons of debilitated constitutions will find these Bitters advantageous to their health, us we know from experience the salutary ellectpicy have upon weak systems." Mthtli E VIDENCE. The Hon. C. D. Ilistmisk, Mayor of the city of Camden, N. J., says "BOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS: We have seen many fluttering notices of this medicine, and the source from which they came induced us to make inquiry respecting its merits. k'runi inqui ry we were persuaded to use it, and must say we found it specific in its action upon diseases of the liver and digestive organs, and tile powerful in fluence it exerts upon nervous prostration is real ly surprising. It calms and streughtens the nerves bringing them into a state ofrepose, making sleep refreshing. "If this medicine was more generally used, we are satisfied there would be less sickness, as tram the stomach, liver, and nervous system the great majority of real and imaginary diseases emanate. Have them in a healthy condition, and you can bid defiance to epidemics generally. This extra ordinary medicine we would advise our friends who are at all indisposed, to give a trial—it will recommend itself: It should, in liter , be in every family. No other medicine can produce such ev idences of merit. Evidence upon evidence has been received (like the foregoing) from all sections of the Union, the also thraa years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is inure of it used in the prac tice of the regular Physicians of Philadelphia, than all other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be csablislied, and folly proving that a scientific preperation will Meet with their quiet approval when presented even in this form._ 'Phut this Medicine will cure Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, nu one can doubt after using it us directed. It acts specifically upon the stomach and liver; it is preferable to calomel in all biliou4 dis eases—the effect is immediate. They can be ad ministered to tamale or infant with safety and re liable benefit at any time. Look well to the marks of the genuine They have the written signature of C. M.
