    THE THINKER AND TILE DOER.
One sits at home, with pale, impassive brow,
Bent on the eloquence of lifeless letters;
Noting maws thoughts from Mind's first dawn,
till now,
When Truth seems, Heaven inspired, to burst
her fetters.
Another plies the force of stalwart limbs,
And keen wit sharpened by the whirl of action;
For midnight lore no studious lamp he trims,
Curtained and niuttled from the world's distrac
tion.
Two destines—converging to one end,
The glorious issue of all human labour;
Where in harmonious union softly blond
The praise of God—the profit of our neigh.
boar.
Each has his gift—the stamp affixed at birth,
That marks him for the servant of a Master;
The chosen steward of His realm of Earth;
The shepherd watching for a higher Pastor.
Each has his crown—or earthly laurels hero,
Gathered and woven by the hand of mortals:
And when the Spirit City's towers appear,
Dropped on his brow by angels at its portals.
Judge not which serves his mighty Master best,
Haply thou mightest be true worth's detractor;
For each obeys his nature's high behest,—
The close-pent thinker, and the busy actor.
It Won't Do.
The editor of the Yankee Blade, says it
is curious how many thousand things there
are, which it won't do to do upon this cozy
planet of ours, whereupon we eat, sleep,
and get our dinners. For instance—
It won't do to plunge into a law suit,
relying wholly on the justice of your cause,
and not equipped beforehand with a brim
ming purse.
Ii won't do to tweak a man's nose, or
tell him he lies, unless you are perfectly
satisfied he has not spunk enough to resent
it by blowing your brains out, or (if you
have no brains) crack your skull.
It won't) clo, when snow drifts are piled
up mountains high, and sleighs are eter
nally upseting, to ride out with a beauti
ful, lively, fasinating girl, and not expect
to got smashed with her.
It won't do to crack jokes on old maids,
in the presence of unmarried ladies who
have passed the age of forty.
It won't do to imagine a legislature, fed
at the public crib, will sit but six weeks,
when two-thirds of the members have not
the capacity to earn a decent living at
home.
It won't do for a man to fancy a lady's
in love with him because she treats him ci
villy, or that she has virtually engaged
herself to him, because she has always en
dured his company.
It won't do to be desperately enamored
of a pretty face till you have seen it at the
breakfast table.
It won't do to be so devoted to a ten
derhearted wife as to comply implicitly
with her request when she asks you, "Now,
tumble over the cradle, and break your
neck, my dear, won't you?"
It won't do to take hold of a hair-trigger
pistol during a fit of the blnes.
It won't do for a politician to imagine
himself elected to the Gubernatorial chair,
while "the back counties remain to be
heard from."
It won't do to pop the question more
than a dozen time after a lady has said
"No!"
It won't do to extol the beauty of a
lady's hair before you know whether it did
not once belong to another lady's head.
It won't do to talk of cabbage when tai
lore aro standing by, nor of wooden nut
megs and white oak hams, when there are
Connecticut Yankees about.
It won't do to go barefoot in winter to
get rid of trouble from corns..
r.U" Dr. Wall, once at a dinner table
very unwisely persisted in playing with a
cork, in such a manner as displayed a hand
long divorced from soap and water. One
guest expressed his surprise to another, and
in too loud a , whisper, exclaimed, " Heav
ens, what a dirty hand !"
The Dr. overheard, and turning sharply
round, said,. "Sir, I'll bet you a guinea
there's a dirtier one in company."
Done," replied the first, sure of win
ning. The guineas were staked, and the
Doctor. showed his other h%nd. He was
judged• to have won, without a dissenting
voice.
irr A worshipper of Bacchus, passing
over the Common, found the malls quite
too narrow, and after several latteral move
ments, brought up suddenly against one of
the pumps. "You blockhead !" said he,
shaking his fists, pugnaciously at the pump,
"cant you go along the walk without run
ning agin a body V'

DIGESTIVE FLUID,
OR, GASTRIC .11.110 E.
Prepared (rain Rennet, or the fourth
stomach of the ox, after directions of Baron
Liebig, the great Physiological Chemist, by J. S
Houghton, M. D. Philadelphia, Pa.
This is a truly wonderful remedy for Indigestion,
Dyspepsia, Jaundice, Liver Complaint, Consti
pation, and Debility, Curing after Nature's own
method, by Nattir's own Agent, the Gastric
Juice.
r Half a teaspoonful of PErsm, infused in wa
ter,
will digest or dissolve, Fire Pounds of Roast
Beef in about two hours, out of the stomach.
P,VPSIN is the chief element, or Great Digest
ing Principle of the Gastric Juice—the Solvent of
the Food, the Puri lying, Preserving, and Stimula
ting Agent of the Stomach and Intestines. It
is extracted from the Digestive Stomach of the
Ox, thus forming an Artificial Digestive Fluid,
precisely like the natural Gastric Juice in its
Chemical powers, and furnishing a Complete and
Perfbct Substitute for it. By the aid of this
preparation, the pains and evils of Indigestion and
Dyspepsia aro removed, just as they would be by
a healthy Stomach. It is doing wonders for Dys
peptics, curing cases of Debility, Emaciation, Ner
vous Decline, and Dyspeptic Consumption, sup
posed to be on the verge of thegrave. The
Scientific Evidence upon which it is based, is in
the highest degree Curious and Remarkable.
SCIIINTFIC EVIDENCE!
BARON LEIBIG in his celebrated work on
Animal Chemistry, says: "An Artificial Diges
tive Fluid, analogous to the Gastric Juice, may
he readily prepared Luca.; the meat and eggs, will
be softened, changed, and digested, just in the
same manner as they would be in the human
stomach."
Dr. COMBS, in his valuable writings on the
"Physiology of Digestion," observes that "a
dimkution of the duo quantity of the Gastric
Juice is a prominent and all-prevailing cause of
Dyspepsia;" and he states that " n ditinguished
professor of medieine in London, who .was severe
ly afflicted with this complaint, finding everything
else tofail, boil recourse to the Gastric Juice, ob
tained from the stomachs of living animals, which
proved completly successful."
Dr. GRAHAM, author of the famous works
on "Vegetable Diet„" says t "It is a remarkable
fact In physiology, that the rtomachs of animals,
macerated in water, impart to the fluid the prop
erty of dissolving various articles of food, and of
effecting a kind of artificial digestion of them in
no wise different from the natural digestive pro
cess."
ar Call on the Agent, and get a Descriptive
Circular, gratis, giving a large amount of Scien
tific Evidence, similar to the above, together with
Reports of Remarkable Cures, from all parts of
the United States.
AS A DYSPEPSIA CURER,
Rr. HOUGHTON'S PEPSIN has produced the
most marvelous effectsi in curing cases of Debili
ty, Emaciation, Nervous Decline, and Dyspeptic
Consumption. It is impossible to give the details
of cases in the limits of this advertisement; but
authenticated certificates have been given of more
than Two Hundred Remarkable Cures, in Phila
delphia, New York and Boston alone. These
were nearly all desperate cases, and the cures
were not only rapid and wonderful, but perma
nent.
It is a great Nervous Antidote, and particularly
useful for tendency to Bilious disorder, Liver
Complaint, Fever and Ague, or badly treated Fe
ver and the evil effects of Quinine, Mercury, and
other drugs upon the Digestive Organs, after a
long sickness. Also, for excess in. eating, and the
