    A GOOD SUGOESTION.—It has been
proposed that the Government cause envel
opes to be manufactured with with the pre
payment stamp engraved on them. There
are but few people who send letters with
out pro-payment now, and those letters
which aro not pre-paid, ought not to be
taken from the postofbee. Therefore, if
the envelope could be purchased with the
stamp upon it, a great deal of trouble and
vexation might be saved.
Mr.& young gent of Baltimore, at a
party the other evening, threw himself in
a tragio position before his lady-love, ask
ing her to have him—she laughed at him—
he desperately drew a pen knife,—forgot
one of the blades was opened: stabbed
himself in the breast. The ladies scream
ed: the tragedian was carted home where
it was discovered that he was more fright
ened than hurt.
2 1100FLANE'S GERMAN BITTERS. -These cel
ebrated Bitters prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson,
120 Arch street, Philadelphia, are performing as
tonishing cures throughout the whole con ntry.—
We can bear witness to their curative powers in
the case of a friend of ours who had the Liver
Complain, awl who hail tried almost every other
medicine, hut without effect. After taking a few
bottles of these Bitters he was entirely cured. To
those who are similarly afflicted we recommend
them to take the preparation, knowing that they
will cure the disease spoken of, and many others
to which " flesh is heir to." There is a spurious
article made in Philadelphia. The only pla.m to
get the genuine article is 120 Arch street, Phila
delphia, of Dr. Jackson, or his agents throughout
the country.

Birmingham Female Seminary.
The summer term of this hurling institution
closed on the 23d ult., with a public examination
of the classes, which elicited good attention from
a respectable audience.
The promptness, on the part of scholium, in an
swering, was indicative of an acquaintance with
their respective studies, to he gained only by a
commendable degree of application on the part of
both teacher and sehollars.
The essays written by the ladies and read nt in
tervals throughout the day and evening, were in
deed spicy and highly creditable, manifesting
more than ordinary care in their preparation.
All the prospects of this limitation seem to
brighten, and though there hats been some unavoi
dable delay in completing the seminary building
now under way yet (Providence favoring) it will
he finished early: and there is already sufficient
ground to expect, when it is completed, a large
accession to the number in attendance, which
has already been beyond expectation.
Those desirous of availing themselves of the
advantages of this school, used not hesitate to

proved completly successful."
Dr. GRAHAM, author of the famous works
on "Vegetable Diet„" says "It is a remarkable
fact in physiology, that the rtomachs of animals,
