GREAT FIRE IN PHILADELPHIA !
REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE
GREAT IRON SAFE BURNING,
MAY BTn, 1851 :
THE iihdetsighed haying cotischted, at the re
quest of Mr. JOHN FARREL, to serve as a
Committee to withess a trial by fire of WILD—
ER'S PATENT SALAMANDER SAFES,
manutactured by SILAS C. HERRING, make
the following
REPORT:
The experiment was tried on the " Burnt Dis
trict," corner of Front and New streets. A brick
furnace was constructed, in which was placed one
of "Herring's Salamander Safes," of ordinary
sine and thickness, that had been in use about 18
months in the counting house of Messrs. I. Wood
side & Co., anti three other Safes, called "fire
proof," manufactured in this city, and with the
maker's name thereon.
A largo quantity of charcoal, rosin and pine
wood was placed under and around each Safe, and
ignited at twelve o'clock, M. Apertures having
been left in the sides of the furnace, a strong
draft was created, and all four Safes subjected to
an intense heat. At 2 o'clock, I'. M., it was evi
dent that the contents of all the Safes but the
"Herring's" Salamander were on fire. At 3 o'-
clock, the three (so-ealled) "Fire Proofs" were re
moved, leaving Herring's Safe alone in the Fur
nace, around whirls fresh fuel woo now placed,
and an active fire kept up until 5 o'clock P. M.,
when the embers were removed, and the Soft al
lowed to cool.
At 7, P. M., the Safes were opened. One had
fallen to pieces, and the contents of the three were
reduced to charcoal. Books and loose papers had
been placed in each, and on opening the " Her
ring Salamander" the contents were found in good
order. In fact, there was not the least appearance
of the action of lire, except that some of the pa
pers were slightly stained by steam.

JESSE GODLEY.
The Safes named above, which Mete so com
pletely distanced by the " Herring Salamander,"
were stamped "Evans & Watson," " Oliver
Evans," and " L. Shaninger," and were sold by
their respective makers as " Warranted Fire-
Proof Chests. The public are invited to call and
examine them, at the IRON SAFE DEPOT,
