Mexita.
The New Orleans Picayune. alluding to tfte
late Mexican news, says—No direct war can he
declared by Mexico in the present condition of her
affairs, the fool-hardiness of such,a pleasure would
he monstrous. And it le not unreasonable to nay
that the qtsasi war, which has so many advocates—r
a war for the re-conquest of Texas—is_ almost
equally impracticable. There is some deep-seated,
corroding disease preying upon the vitals of the
,government; a fixed distrust among the men of note
deprives the administration of that union ,of,niinis
eeriel ability and experience, which would acquire
confidence for the government, and give to it de
termined energy. The President seems, patrioti
cally disposed; he sees, too, the right course to be
pursued in the administration of affairs, but he hes
itates and procrastinates; he feels the weaknqes of
his power, and the people know it. Wicked and
designing men are watching him, ready to grasp at
any advantage which may bo offered them by an
unguarded move. Ho is evidently not the man
for a great crisis, and the affairs of Metier) have
certainly reached one.
Mr. M'Lane in England.—Notwiteiending the
disclaimers of the GoverOgieitt official paper it is
:very evident that the inipressid'n on both sides of
the Atlantic is that Mr. M'LLNO has gone to th'e
British Court for the special Plirpose of carrying
on the Oregon negotiation with Lord ABERDEEN,
her Majesty's Minister on Foreign Affairs.
Now whether the negotiation On the Oregon
question is still going on at Washington or not Or
whether Mr. BUCHANAN and the British Minister,
Mr. PAKENRAM, have found themselves at a stand
without any reasonable probability of coming to a
satisfactory arrangement of the matter in contra
versy, the anxious eyes of both countries are un•
doubtedly turned towards the Court of St. James.
I( Mr. McLirreshall fail in his efforts to adjust
this business, is it supposed that the negotiations at
Washington will be productive of a different re
sult?
The friendly manner in which Mr. McLuca has
been received at the British (Joao; and the kind
terms in which he is spoken of by the London press,
are auspicious, so far as they go. They clearly de
note the general desire of the British people to see
the present difficulties betWeon the two countries
peacefully and honorably iidjusted. Nevertheless
the European times does not attempt 'to conceal the
fact that formidable °Wades are in the way. Let
pis hope that they will all ho removed, and that a
happy termination of our, existing controversies
with England may lay the foundation for a lasting
peace.—Baltimore American. . .
