Nunitingdon, June 91, I Sl3.
On friend, Colonel Stone, of the New York
Commercial Advertiser, has just, prepared a short
manual for exercise at the dinner table, having in
view the new regulations, said to have been adopted
at the Astor House, of supplying each gentleman
boarder with a linen jacket, to keep him cool at din
per. We hear of nothing presented for the ladies.
The following is the proposed manual :
The head waiter should be commissioned as a
drill officer. The guests being arranged in lines up
and down the tables, a peal of the gong will bring
them to order. Then the words:—
" Ready !"
Off coats !"
-"On jackets r'
" Steady !"
4 , Be seated."
"Handle spoons!"
And so through the dinner. At the close, another
Teal of the gong.
4. Ready !"
" Rise up!"
4, Off jackets!"
"On coats!"
" Handle tooth-picks!"
" Diamixsrd !"

Judges Salaries,
A flarrishog correspondent of the Penns
sylvanta Inquirer, of date of June 9th,
states that on that morning the Supreme
Court had decided that the law taxing the
salaries of the Judges of the several courts
is unconstliulona/ ; and also that the law
reducing the salaries $4OO, does not ex
tend to those whose appointment was prior
to the increase of salaries soon after the
adoption of the new Constitution.
The case was brought up on a Millidti-
MUI upon the Treasurer, who refused to
pay the a Clary of Judge HEPBURN, of Car.
lisle. Judke HEPBURN claimed $2,000,
and the State Treasurer refused to pay
more than $l6OO. It was argued that
Judge IlFrouart having been appointed
before the salary was raised, the $4OO was
• nothing than a gratuity, which the Legis
lature was at liberty to take away, The
court, however, thought otherwise and so
decided. It also decided that it was un
constitutional to lay a specific tax upon
the salaries of Judges, as it would du in-
directly what could not be done directly,
viz: reduce the salaries of Judges fixed,
by law, (luring their continuance in office.
Judge RODGF.RS delivered the opinion of
• the Court, which was very able, and occu
pied about an hour in the delivery. •
