IN EARNEST.
. It is now nearly six_ years, since we
commenced the publication of the " Jour
nal;" and (luring that time, we have wai
ted long anti patiently on many of our
professed friends to pay us the little
amount due fur subscription, advertising,
IS•c. We have waited until patience has
ceased to be a virtue. We shall wait no
longer; and such;of our patrons as know
themselves to be indebted to us for three,
tar, five, and six years, may rest assured
that their accounts will be placed in the
hands of the law for collection, immedi•
ately after the April court. By perseve
rance in the way of begging, and by the
punctuality of many of our real friends,
we have been allowed to slip quietly along;
but now the time is coining when we must
have some of the money due us.
There is no more certaiw method, where
by to break down a paper, than by s üb
scribing and never paying for it. Hired
writers, nor the threats of men in power,
nor their purchased bullies, can ever
make a successful effort to silence an in•
dependent and fearless press ; while the
nsidious assaults of pretended friends,
in the shape of apparent support, must
crush it to the earth.
To our real friends, we return the
thanks of a grateful heart. To patrons,
without pay, we respectfully, but firmly
say, that their accounts will be made out
for settlement, at the coming court—if
then unsettled, as the old man in the ta
ble said, we shall try What virtue there is
in force.
The Veto ! ! !
We have nearly filled our columns
with the last (as far as heard from) vet•
of our Governor; and shall defer any re.
marks on the subject until next week.
We had also intended to insert the Bill
offered by Mr. Johston, which is intended
t• pi-v/Ide a small note currency for our
State,—its length precluded the possibili.
ty of doing so this week, and that we
have also deferred. It is gennerally sup
posed that this bill will become. a law.
The Psesident judge.
The nomination of G. W. Woodward,
as President Judge of this district has
been confirmed by the Senate, but he has
not yet arrived.
By order of Court there will be an ad
journed Court in June.

The clouds of war are still accumulating
'in die North and East. British Soldiers are
now encamped on American ground. Vol
unteers are required to have their accou
trements in complete order. No excuse
will be taken for rusty arms. Militia Cap
tains will be required to have their roles
particularly correct, so that drafts can be
made on the shortest notice. The right of
every citizen to keep and bear arms is a
constitutional privilege we enjoy, and one of
the inherent rights of freemen which is gen
nerally denied to the subjects of Monarchi
cal governments; it is therefore hoped that,
no citizen soldier will be permited to dis
race the ranks of his company by appear
ing without sufficient fire arms. The pen
alties of the law must be enforced against
all delinquents.
