City of Canton, in 001..ber last, I deem it city
f,iinty to give a correct version of the affair, es
teeming it but an-act of justice to an uoeicep
tionable gentleman, and a true representative of
Republicanism and Democracy. I will give, 00
the best of authority, a correct and impartial
version of the affair, the truth of which most re
main uttquestoned, prefacing it by a few re
marks.
General Keenan, by a manly 4e• democratic
course of conduct, by not identifying himself
strictly with the gaglesh and vagabond inter
ests—partaking u tie it "magnificent hoapitali
ty,"—has elicited a bowl just as might be ex•
peeted to come from a set of curs to whom the
very name of democracy if. an abomination; yea:
even of desolation. The best evidence of the
Consul's merit is his popularity amongst Ameri•
can Merchant Captaiva and officers visiting Hong

name. 1 venture to affirm that there is not an

one who more truly merits ihe title of a gentleman

prisoner's alive within the city., It has heretofore
been supposed that all prisoners in the hands of
the Chinese were marsacred without mercy--a
mistake such as is often made regarding the Chi
nese, by Endish biographers. As an evidence
that there is some "good in China," we see that
the noted merchant llowqua' has visited Maeao
and puirchased $60,000 worth of rice to give to
his starving countrymen. r have yet to bear
in this community that it is a "generous act."
Great preparations are being made to receive

Lord Elgin, who is expected by the•mail steam
er of the 10th of June. The appointment of
this gentlemen hasgiven the greatest satisfaction
to the British residents In China, who hope and
expect great things firm him.

you that the much coveted island of Formosa
will probablyloe taken possession of by the United
