The reader will be surprised when we state
that whatever of foundation there is for the "ten
oent" charge is embraced in the axtracts which
we have made frow Mr Buchanau's speed',
Throughout the whole of it there is no sentence
or the word which gives even plausibility to tlie
charge. From' beginning to end the speech
abounds in sound, statesmanlite sentiments,
which have been fully illustrated by the exp
ence of the last sixteen years Our chief pur
pose in making such liberal quotations is to vin
dicate the wisdom and firmness and patriutisna
of Mr Buchanan We desiaed to show hew
nobly he sustained General Jackson in his strug
gle with ,the United States Baok—how faithful
and ably he maintained the Democratic position
on the lndepent treasury system—how clearly be
compriihended - and how forcibly he presented . 1
the merits of that system--and how clearly and
"earnestly he advocated the interests of the labor•
ing Mao. It is, indeed, strange that the charge
of a wish 13 reduce the wages of laboring men
should 'be based on anything in this speech.—
But it must .be recollected that it was during the
remarkable canc...ss of PAO that this charge ob
tained currency in the then condition of the

Among other• who undertook to auewer Mr
Beichanan's speech was the Hon Jelin Devi,. of
Massachusetts—he that was usually known as
"honest John Davie " Ha aesiumed in Lis ar
piment, directly in the teeth of the fact, that
Mr B Inman had advocated the independent
treasury he ground that it would eetablish an
exclusive allic currency. Starting with this
erroneoue ass mption, he argued to show that it
would bring town the wages of labor t • the
standard of prices in couutriee where the curren
cy is exclusively metallic To this speech, when
published, there ICIA :in appendix in which Le
introduced a table silo% lug that, In 'owe of the
exclusive ruetailte ceuutries of Europe laberers
only received ten cents a day. Puttiug the
speech and appendix together, the hint was ta
ken, and a clamor raised that the Democrats
wore it favor of reducitig the wages of labor ti
ten cents a day
In a subequent speech, made on the 3d March.
1k.411, Mr Buchanan den .unced the charge
against him in the strengeet language, saying:
" Self re pest, a-. well as the respect which I

After restating further his arguments as pre

" I contended that it would tir , t injure, tint

the eonstsnt employment, the regular wages, mud

produce this happy result, not by establishing a
pure metalic currency, but 'by reducing the
amount of your bank issues within reasonable

In the Territory of Kansas there is a city
called Lawrence. In the State of Maseaehuseets
then is also n ae n i e ti called Lawrence: indeed, the
m
former was alfter the Wier, and intended,
like the latter, to do honor to the name of
family widely and favorably known as merchants
throughout the Union. Tits city of Lawrence,
in Kansas, has lately been made the theatre of
scenes of violence A sheriff and a posse of
twenty men have taken possession peaceably of
the guns, cannon, and ammunition which had
been there gathered for the avowed purpose of
resisting the rims of the land, and shooting
down the officers and constituted authorities of
the Territory. Over ibis "outrage," this "horri
ble atrocity," this " fiendish pursuit of free
men," as Reeder called it, the abolition papers
of Chicago and of the country are howling with
excessive unction
We wish to call up to the minds of these men,
and to spread before the reflecting and intelligent
men of the day, a brief chapter in history of the
country, and a chapter not yet two years old.
Is the month ofJnly, 1854, a few brief hours
after the celebration of the glorious anniversary
of independence, a band of "ruffians," twelve
hundred strong, living iu and about the oily of
Lawrence, in the State of Massachusetta--that
soil which Sumner calla his home, and wherein
the abolitionists declare no man can stand except
as an equal in the eyes of God and man—in that
city oflaiwrence, in the State of Massachusetts,
on the 6th day of July, 1854,- this band of twelve
hundred "Massachusetts freemen," witboat one
word of provocation, assaulted at midnight the
humble tenments and cabins, inhabited by free
white laborers and their families, and in two
hours leveled forty of those dwellings of the
poor In vain did woman shriek for mercy at
the hands of "Massachusetts freemen;" in vain
(IA u itupl.,ro that aged parents he allow
I to eluthe themselves in their usual garments;
the tar. of "Ma-sachusetts freemen" were dep .
to all such appeals In vain did the husband
ask that the humble roof which sheltered the
person of his wife, then in the pangs of child
birth, he not tired until he could procure another
place for the agr*tized wife and anticipated babe!
The hearts of "Massachusetts freemen" inhabit
ing the "city of Lawrence" refused the prayer,
and thrust wife and children out upon the barren
fields, where, with no other canopy than that
afforded by the stars, a child was burn upon the
of the humanityloving Massachusetts! These
things occured in Lawrence, in the State of
Massachusetts, And who ever read an article in
the abolition papers of the country calling on
Well arid
. money to defend the homes of those
free white I iborirs, outraged and torn down in
the city .if Lawrence, in the free State of Mas
, sachus,,sW
One of the victims of that night of atrocity
iu Lawrence, Muleachusetts, was sadly injured
'ebv a blow from a stone cast by one of the
ruffians; both he and his ruffian assailant came
to Chic igo; the latter stalks the streets brawling
for freedom in Kansas, while the former reposes
in the cemetery, hastened to an untimely grave
by the ruffianism of the "freemen of Massachu
setts," committed in the city of Lawrence!
The free white laborers of the city of fAit
rence resolved to submit to no repetition of the
outrage, of the "freemen of Lawrence." One
of them, now a citisen of Chicago, repaired to
' liceoou, and there purchased for the use of him.
self and his companions, and G. defend them.
ive , and their wi r iandr6ild,cu from violence,
e utb lent number of guns, pistols, powder, and
ball These were packed in boxes and convey
, d t.. Lawrence Upon their arrival there, a
lut numbs of the ruffians waylaid the wagon,
I attempted to carry off the boxes containing the
weapons 6f fence—the driver succeeded in
reaching the house of the owner, and there for
hours a conte-t was waged in the city of Law
' r,n..e, in the frei Stale of Massachusetts,
%lietl.er fro white men were entitled to the
privilege of keeping arms
The arm• were u put into the hands for
which they w. re desigued, and then by armed
force men drove back the ruffians, and
‘irelleated tio•ir ,awn constitutionally secured
liberty The Mayor and the authorities of that
city of Lawrence see lard O.:: demand of the
Mage..t,liu.f.tts ruffians that these guns should be
del t+ r, d tip Who has ever heard that this
reckless, brutal outrage, committed by the "free
, men of Massachusetts." in the free city of Law
rence, called forth on,. scud cf condemnation
from any of these presses which are now filled
with such indignant intectiviis against Sheriff
Jones and his poto.e, who have taken possession
of the other city of Lawrence, in the Territory
of Kansas' The owner. of these muskets, par
chased, a• ae have said, to defend the very
hearthstones of free white men in Lawrence,
Massachusetts, was that night assailed in the
street and stabbed with a bowie knife in the side.
He drew his pistol and fired at his assailant,
wounding him in the arm For this he was
seized sod thrown into prison, the Judge who ea
ordered it saying that to release him would be to
insure both his own and the prisoner's murder
by the , armed ruffians. The court room was filled
with armed builties, bunting to death the man
who had purchased fire arm, todefend the house
in which resided his wife and chi:dren. The
court itself, satisfied that the accused (now a
citizen of Chicago) hail committed no offence,
declared that to release him would be to decree'
the murder of both Court and prisoner. And
this 4as in Lawrence. not Lawrence in Kansas,
but in Lawrence in the free State of M asso ,oh u .
setts.
Who can remember that the abolitionists of
Cticago ever held a public meeting to sympa
thise with, or contribute a dollar to assist, those
free white men, who were struggling upon soil
long since consecrated to freedom, for the humble
right of living in their own houses, exempt from
midnight outrage and brutal violence ! Oh, no!
Goodrich and Arnold and Lamed and Blackwell
and Vaughan had no tears to shed over the oils
rages in Lawrence, Massachusetts, because that
was a ease-where the intolerant spirit of Massa
chusetts htgotery was outraging the rights of free
;white. men. No re g iments were raised to march
I to. Lawrence, Massiclitsetts, but the unfortunate
i f r i ct i me were o ,, tu p e tt e d to defend, as beat they
ould, the commonest rights of humanity.
