Who Discovered- the Opes Polar this.
A letter from Eagle River, Lake Superior, to
the Cleveland Herald, says:
During the fall and early pan of the winter,
the newspapers of New York and the &stem
cities referred to Dr. Dane's visit to the North
Polar Sea as au act of discovery, and I have not
MN yet seen it noticed in any other way. 1 am
not aware that Dr. K himself assumed this hon
or, or any other merit to whio'i he is not enti
th‘d, being a man of modesty as well as courage.
The open Polar Sea was known if not discovered
more than thirty years since by Lieut. Wrangel,
of the Russian navy, who is I presume the Ad•
mind Wrangel, if the present time. He made
a journey Northward on the ice from Cape One
latskio, which is about 6'o degrees of longitude
\Vest of Behring's Straits, on the Northern coast
of Asia, in latitude 74 degrees North, cud at
about 600 miles came to the Polar Ocean.
This was reported by him in a published nar-1
rative made to the Russian Government, and re
printed in the English language about the year
1524. I have never seen this tour referred to by
any of the Arctic travelers, although the book
is no doubt in many libraries in Engiandand the
United States. It is easy to see why the Eng
lish would ignore this fact, for the purpose of
claiming the same discovery in Wellington Chan
ta. by Captain Penny, in 1852. Americans, how
ever, Lave I hope, nosuch motives. Our Arctic
navigators, 1 feel warranted in saying, would not
t . ..r a monisut think of imitating their British
eollegues in this species of piracy In questions
f bi , •tit• and priority of discovery, there should
he but one rule—the rule of strict truth--. 11111.
teinal bias and home glory having no more to do
with it than in i . ttling a question of latitude or
I ,, tigitude
Lieut NVrangci traveled on sledges, with no
kbut alchohol, and no artificial heat but that
. pint lamp, As he advanced, he cat pluses
in the ice and deposited provisions, on which
sv ms e was poured, tillind up the cavity. These
place!, were marked, sn that they were roily
roefignivil on the return He found the
~• tt to be shallow, and the climate warmer than
it was ou the Asiatic coast The journey was
wale without the loss of men, and so little auf
ferinoz that it is evident such tripe may be made
to the Northward whenever the ice is solid. So
f..r a'- I know, h. was the first to look out upon this
solitary sea, and to him and to the Russian Sov
treigp are due the honors that belong to such
aclov..nieut, Ile must have been in latitude

they lack the cash, and that is indispensible to
currency in Washington Society.
M de Sirtiges, the French minister, has ac

in his odd fancifull way, he recently called at a
party given at Senator Bayard's (of Delaware)

But what wouid she do ? She dare not claim it
