We invite attention to the p rocee di ngs o f t h e
Democratic County Convrntion, given at length
in smother oolumn. 'roe oonvention was very
full, every township and election district but two
being PePresente‘:. And, we may add, in view
of the many local and personal interests which
of necessity came in conflict with one another,
the proceedings were oondueted with a good deal
of harmony. Like the whig convention, local
interests and personal claims came in conflict,
producing doubtless bitterness of feeling and
transient animosities, but we apprehend the tick
et promoted will not suffer therefrom. Indeed
it ought not, for in all essential particulars it is
a good one. In truth, in point of character,
talent and qualifications, it is in some respects
superior to that of either of the other parties,
and hence ought to receive the cordial endorse
ment of every man belonging to, or claiming to
set with the Democratic organization.
To particularize. The candidates for the As
sembly, MOWS. GRANT and WHALLON, are both
men that cannot fail to make popular and able
representatives. To their hands we have every
confidence all the interests of the county can be
confided with perfect safety. Mr Whallon as is
well known, exercised a very salutary and marked
influence at the State Capital last winter during
the pendency of our railroad bill. A ready tact
tician, an indefatigable worker, and possessed
withal of an extensive acquaintance among the
public men of the State, it will be perceived that
he would at once take rank among the leading
men of the House. In no essential particular is
the other gentleman, Mr. GRANT, behind him.
A severe student, and a man of indomitable en
ergy, he acts upon and carries out in every thing
he undertakes Kossuth's famous motto, "there is
no such word as fail to him that wills." And
when we add to this, that necessary qualification
of all successful legislators, the faculty of mak
ing and retaining friends, we think the conven
tion presentee a gentleman to the people fur
their suffrages whose election would be an honor
to the county and a benefit to the State.
Of the candidates for Sheriff, County Com
missioner, Auditor, and Director of the Poor,
we have but to say that no better selections could
have been made. Gen. Killpatrick is one of our
most enterprising and substantial farmers; a
gentleman who, by a course of industry and
strict business habits, has acquired a very respec
table competency. His enemies have inde.stri
ously circulated a report that he is not quedified,
but we apprehend that the best evidence in the
world of a min's qualifications to transact the bu
siness of the public, is the evidence afforded by
the state of his own business If that is in a
satisfactory state, then is it i s legitimate infer
ence that public business confided to him will
not be neglected. But what is more conclusive,
in refutation of this slanteirris the evidence af
forled by the testimony of his own neighbors.
They are, almost to a man, and irrespective of
party, too, his warm and devoted friends, as his
vote in the townships of Millcreek and Harbor
creek will abundantly show.
least' B. TAYLOR, nominated for Director of
the Poor, is an influential citizen of W ashington
township. He is just such a man as we want for
the position to which he is naraed. Judge
Htrousow, of Girard, the candi date for Com
missioner, is so well known that any thing from
us, by way elssdorsement, is entirely superflu
ous. He was Associate Jurlg eof our Court for
a number of years, in wh;,ch capacity he made
heats of friends, as his vote will testify in Octc
her Z. E. Peck, of Herb orcreek, nominated for
Auditor, will fill the poet, should he be elected,
with honor to himself and profit to the county
As a whole, then, as before remarked, the ticket
is a good oncouid well worthy the support of
the people.
