We learn from ('apt. Hewell, that a man came '
to the luck up last evening and claimed shelter
for the night under circumstances of a peculiar
nature. His bead was completely shaved, not
a vestige of hair upon his cranium, in fact noth
ing visible but the bare scalp. His back was
one mass of coagulated blood, caused he said, by
fifty stripes being inflicted upon him, at Fort
McHenry.
In answer to questions from the captain be
stated that he had been a soldier in the I S.
army, stationed at Fort Nlellenry, and that he
had deserted, and ou being arrested, was sen
tenced to have his haul shaved, to receive fifty
lashes upou the bare back and be drummed out of

advanced state of pregnauy, yet at the same

undertook secretly to produce abortion. She
suffered severely from the effects, and at last
when a physician was called to her, she eonfess
ed her guilt, but to late too save her life.
