The rule in our policies is the mine as that of
Insurance Companies generally, and is plainly
printed on all the policies iasned by our compa
ny and in the following words. "Bappients of
los,es shall be made in /ow eseatils after the lou
shall hare heels ascertained and proved." The
reasons for this rule are obvious, and it is aoqui
esced•iu by the business community every where
at being just and proper. The time reserved
by all Conipanies in their policies before being
required to make payment, allows opportunity
for investigations which Ire often necessary - and
could not be bad were losses payable with the
promptness Mr. Braley requires.
It is true that the stringency of the rule is
sometimes relaxed and payment made sooner
than the rule would require. Thus, in the case
of Mr Wood, alluded to in Mr Braley's "card."
A poor man and a farmer, his house was burned
to the ground, and he and his family left with
out a roof to shelter them. In such a case the
Board of Directors thought it right to waive, the
rule and pay the loss at once, and accordingly
did mo Mr. Wood knowing that his contract
did not require payment until the expiration of
four mouths, was grateful for what he considered
an act of kindness, and expressed his apprecia
tiou of the favor through the newspaper
Mr Braley's stable was set
_tire to by some
person unknown, about midnight, on the sth of
.lalte, and burned. On the 15th of July, a little
more than a month afterwards, he sees proper to
draw public attention to the matter by inquiring
i n a ".•urd"' in a newspaper why he is not paid
