When Friendship is--here dishonored among
its professed friends, when Love is quenched in

Odd Fellowship by its costitlition and ceremo
nies, connects itself with and assures the oblige
dabs of reli,gion to this extent: it recognizes the
existence of a Supreme,,Being, receives ha reve
lation as authorative and, Divine acknowledges
the thirty of reverence, obedience and worship,
and by inference gives its official sanction to all
the requirements of virtue and morality as set,
forth- in the gospel, to such an extent that in
proportion as we are wanting in the possession
or practice of these virtues we are recreant •to
the obligations of our order, and exhibit that
practical inconsistency. which we sometimes so
kUidly condemn in the conduct of others. These
departures from correct and-consistent conduct
On the part of its members are the real obstruc
tions to the progress of Odd Felloirship. The
real power and promise of an institudoe are not
to be sought for in the number and wealth of
its members, but in the correctness of iteprinci- '
pies, the elevation of its aims and the' uniform
harmony which obtains between its pr ofessions
and its pnlctices. All who are acquainted with
them, acknowledge the significance of our sym
bols and ceremonies, the highly moral tone of
bur charges, and th e

sults. But the quekion still arises, do we avail
oinselvps of these advantages? Do we show
ourselves worthy of these privileges? is it a
living reality or a vain show to us? These are
questions of the last importance for that member

Fellowship, however familiar with itasynibolisms,
however regular at its meetingfi, 'as the enemy
of the order and a foe to humanity. Words and
symbols are of no claire except they represent
good 'thoughts and good deeds.. When good
words cease to do this. they are but the shallow
reseurees of dissimulation and convenient masks
, of hypomecy.
When it shall be evident that in the aggregate
Odd Fellowship does not make nice better, does
not elevate the tone of character and improve
the morals; when it shall appear that its mission
is not a tnission of mercy, but a mission of sel
' fishness; When it shall cease to preach a Roved
of benevolence, slid preach a gospel of uncharit
ableness, then will the flay of its glory darken
to its close. Its continued influence would no
longer be desired by the good, and-could only
minister to the gratification of the selfish and

with the vicious and unprincipled, giving his
countenance or support to the demoralizing teach
ings or tendencies of the age is an anomaly, and
though wearing the regalia, and exhibiting the
symbolic pantomine of Odd Fellowship, is at
heart an alien from the spirit am) truth of the in
stitution.
Are any wanting in honesty, they are not true
Odd Fellows. Are the sick unvisited, the yenta
mid woes of the widow and orphan neared for,
then are,.the obligations of Odd Fellowship bro- •
ken aid disregarded. For we associate ther
that we may minister at the marsh of sickness

An Odd Fellow should be a good mini and I
true--a patron of the arts; promoter of science,

volence andieympathy, and I may be permitted
to congratulate the fraternity on the auspicious
fact, that not only do its tesehings inculcate those
sentiments of benevoleee and kindness most con
genial to the gentle heart of human, hut by the
obligations or the degree of Rebecca, woman's
presence lends its charms, and her virtue lends
its ininence to sanction these sentiments and
endear their practice to the members of the
Order.

duct and overcoming evil with good. Thus shall
